Any wifi connection that is secure, requires authentication to connect, will have the locked padlock to show you that. In other words you need to have the password and type it in so that you can access that network. I understand that ok but can't for the life of me remember how to enter the passwords etc What worked for me is my windows logon and password.

This is something you could try. I dont profess to know how or why it can work but I can vouch that it did work on my laptop when it lost its wifi connection just recently (coincidentaly shortly after the upgrade, but I cant be sure that was the cause). My wifi network was not even appearing the list of available connections although I could use it on my pc and apple devices. Ethernet was fine. Open Device Manager and find your network adapter, right click on it and go to properties then click on the advanced tab. Highlight Scan Valid Interval and its value will likely show as 60 (which is the default) Change it to 120 and click OK Then restart your machine. If it has not worked you can just change it back to 60.

GLad that worked for you Barney. I could not do that number 5 on the list I posted because my connection was not visible. I could see about 10 others round the neighbourhood but not my own !

Same here Eve. I could see about 5 around my area but not my own!
Incidentally, what have we gained by installing this massive update? I personally cannot see any difference on the machines which I have updated, apart from the difficulty in getting wifi to work!

That is a good point !
I believe the general advice is still to wait. I have had a Cumulative Update in addition since the May 2020 Update (KB4557957) which appears to mainly address security issues.
I have had no connection problems with my main computer, it was just my laptop which is old and I can not be certain the update caused the problem, I do suspect it did though.
I have to say I have noticed Edge cruising along much faster, not that I had any complaints before. I have compared its memory usage with Firefox and it uses significantly less Cortana is supposed to be improved but as I don't use it I can't say. Actually I can't use it because MS thinks those of us in this part of the world have an unknown language so it has never been an option. The actual Network Status page in Settings has more options and is easier to negotiate. I have noticed an app launcher on the Edge interface which may have been there already and I just hadn't noticed it. Very handy. It also tells my my local weather/temperature. Search seems faster and there are more options in search settings. If you want to check out the new features got to the Update settings page and click on View Update History and then under the Feature Update click on See Whats New In this Update and on that Page press the button saying Explore Whats New. I think you can only access all this if the update was done via Windows Update. If it was acquired through the Update Assistant it may not be available.
