I've been having to press the power button about 3 times and holding for the computer to boot up. Seems like I had this same trouble with the last Dell laptop I had before it quick. Any suggestions to what could be the problem other than buying a new laptop? This one is about 5 yrs old (guesstimate).

Is the laptop plugged in or not??? If not have you tried with it plugged in??
Please try these steps first, these were found on the HP site but works the same with ALL brands of laptop.
Perform a hard reset.
Steps to do it: Power down the computer and unplug the charger. Then remove the battery. Hold down the power button of the unit for 15 seconds to discharge static electrical charges inside the machine. Replace the battery and reconnect the charger. Try to power on the computer. If it fires up immediately then the issue is fixed. Otherwise, try to power on the computer without the battery and check if it works right away.

I need a new battery so I've removed it and been using the charger for years. I'll try the hard reset.

The hard set only worked once then right back to the way it was before.

The hard set only worked once then right back to the way it was before. Then the problem is likely bad power switch, bad power supply or possibly bad motherboard
