I use an Asus laptop with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse and plugged-in monitor. A few days ago I could not use my keyboard to enter my sign-in numbers. I removed all the above and was able type my numbers with the laptop’s keyboard. I then googled for a fix and tried several ones but nothing works. When I attach everything again I can now sign in with the virtual keyboard of the laptop from the access centre. After that everything goes normal. I would like to have the signing-in goes usual and wonder if anyone has a fix for this. Thanks

This is somewhat confusing. Why did you unplug everything when the problem was/is likely the wireless keyboard? You said you tried several fixes but didn't tell us what those were and where you got them. I personally doubt the problem lies with either the mouse or the monitor since the problem is with typing and you can type with the laptop keyboard. I use a wireless mouse and it uses a battery does this wireless keyboard use a battery and if so did you change it? I have never used one so you will have to fill me in. Also, what is the make and model of the wireless keyboard?
You said that AFTER signing in virtually then all works fine...do you mean the wireless keyboard works fine? You also didn't say exactly what happens when you try to sign in...do the numbers not appear? Do the numbers appear to be incorrect? If the numbers do appear are they then not accepted?

I've never used a wireless keyboard but would think it must use a battery and its reached its end of life. Replace it.

I unplugged one thing at a time to see which one it might be. I changed batteries in the keyboard and mouse. Keyboard and mouse work on my husband’s HP laptop. Keyboard is Microsoft and mouse Logitech. when I try to sign in the numbers do not appear. After signing in on the virtual keyboard I can use keyboard and mouse as usual.

At first I just wanted to remove the sign-in screen but I was not able to do that. It would not have helped anyhow because typing did not show when I tried to write an email. Now though I can use the computer as usual but I tried so many different fixes that I have no idea what actually helped.

You have now added additional information that you never mentioned before.....You couldn't type an email either.
We always ask that all information is given when a person posts a problem because incorrect and occasionally dangerous suggestions could be given.
When was the fix completed? It has only been three hours since your original post.
I have to agree with budgall, since you had changed batteries to no avail then I would replace the keyboard.

The keyboard works fine on my husband’s laptop, so I would think it is OK. I also used his keyboard on my laptop and the writing did not work with that one either.

Then that easily points to the problem being with Your computer. Two keyboards, both work on one computer but neither work on the other computer then the problem is that computer.

A couple of years ago my macBookPro laptop began to have a number of problems which I no longer recall. I was using a wireless keyboard. I was advised to disable the wireless keyboard and use the native keyboard which I did. No further problems.

My keyboard, Mouse and monitor are all attached and once I use the virtual keyboard to sign in, everything works perfectly without the virtual keyboard. I would think the problem lies in the settings on my laptop. Thanks both

Remove the usb keyboard dongle then turn on the computer and using the laptop keyboard log into the computer. If all is well, shut down the computer again. Plug the keyboard dongle and restart the computer. Hopefully Windows will find the Wireless Keyboard and install any necessary drivers and settings.

I used these instructions but in the end it did not work. in the meantime I tried to remove the peripherals one by one, and in the end I think it might be the keyboard after all. I now use the big monitor And the mouse but use the laptop keyboard. I am satisfied with that for now but I miss my keyboard

Do try turning off the numlock key. This has been known to re activate the top tow of numbers.
Make sure the Fn key is not stuck down. If there is alternate USB port did you try using it ?
Did you try the keyboard troubleshooter .? Right-click the Windows icon. Select Settings. Select Update & Security. Select Troubleshoot. Select Keyboard to fix problems with keyboard settings.

I tried all of the suggestions but still have problems. I noticed that my left Ctrl key is stuck down and does not work but the right one does, so I shall do that. Since I can use my keyboard as usual once I signed in with the virtual keyboard I will leave well enough alone. Thank you everybody for helping me. Vera

Your stuck Ctrl key Will definitely prevent you from signing in with your pin.
I have tested on my machine entering my pin with the ctrl key held down and nothing happens.
I don’t know why after using an alternate method to sign in the keyboard works properly, but I would certainly attempt to un-stick Ctrl.

WOW my keyboard is now working. I unstuck the ctrl key, luckily I had a can of compressed air, dug out the key with a letter opener and voila, signing in worked. I never eat or drink around the computer and clean the keyboard with a cloth and small brush all the time, so I don't know what happened to the key. Thanks to all for sticking with me. I am now again a Happy Camper :-) Cheers, Vera Stay healthy we need you!!!
