What do you currently recommend for a free antivirus software? I had paid for Bit Defender, but that is expiring very soon. I saw one post where Windows Defender was recommended. Is that still the case? I Googled this question, but don't know which sites to trust for good information.
Thanks in advance!

The built in Windows Defender is truly all you need. Windows Defender is both a 2 way firewall and a great AV program. Just make sure it is turned on and you are good to go. It auto updates as needed. You can do quick or full scans with it. Full scans are not needed except maybe once a month.

Thank you. I'm glad to be able to use something which I already have. In the past, it was one of the first things to be disabled. Good to know it is useful now. I appreciate your help. <3

I appreciate your help. <3 It is excellent. No more third party programs required for AV or Firewall. I have used only Windows Defender since getting my Windows 10 computers.

Be sure to completely remove (uninstall) Bit Defender from your computer. After removal, Windows Defender should automatically activate and be your active antivirus program.

I have been using Windows Defender since Win. 8. Unlike other FREE ones, it does update itself daily. Free is good, but only if it is kept updated which Windows Defender does daily.

While I now use Windows Defender with both my Windows 10 computers on all of my previous computers I used Avira Free and I can say without a doubt that Avira Free DOES update itself automatically multiple times a day. You can also set it to automatically scan whenever you choose
Avast Free is also another Free AV that does also automatically update daily and can also be set to automatically scan when you choose.

Since Windows Defender is NOT a full AV program in Windows 7 AND since Windows 7 is no longer supported by MS (since January 2020) and therefore will NOT receive any more updates or security patches, meaning your PC will also be very vulnerable I say, Yes you do need to keep Avira Free.
