Windows 10 v2004 has now tried to install 3 times and failed, giving precious little indication as to why.
I am stuck at v1909.
Where do I go from here?

Any error codes given? Have you turned off your security programs 100% and tried again? Are you sure you have enough free disk space? You need a minimum of 32GB. If you don't then do a disk cleanup. Remove all external storage media, such as USB drives and SD cards. Also remove any USB connected devices that you don't need. (e.g. USB Printer, USB Wireless Mouse or Keyboard Receiver, USB Wireless Network Card, etc.). Disable Drive Encryption: If you have enabled the device encryption on your system, i.e. something like BitLocker.
Have you run the Windows Update troublshooter? Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Update, or (alternatively), download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Hmmm! Probably space, then. It seems I had (would you believe) 31.99GB on my C drive (SSD). I've freed some up and we'll see what happens next time. I had run the troubleshooter. Didn't tell me anything. Or perhaps it did and I diidn't understand it.

No. I'll just wait until it's offered again. Too many other things to do right now.

No. I'll just wait until it's offered again. Too many other things to do right now. When it is offered and you know for sure it will be make sure that you are doing absolutely nothing else. Close out everything except what is needed to do the update. Unplug all unneeded items...printer, mouse, etc. Also turn off security programs. Then watch the update, you may get a clue as to what the problem might be.
Don't worry about still being on version 1909. My two computers were not even offered 2004 until October 30th. It is truly nothing major and your computer will still be secure. After 2004 then the next Feature update you will be offered is 20H2. I received it this week. All along I received ALL offered updates and I know my computer was secure. So don't worry. It will come through.

I have made five attempts to download and install this update on my wife's laptop and every time after usually approx. 6 hours I get a failed installation message. This last time, today, after waiting six hours, the laptop restarted and ended up with a black screen with only an HP logo in the middle of the screen. I waited another hour before eventually switching off and rebooting. The computer then gave the impression that it was installing the update and restarted back to the Windows Home Screen. On checking the 'Settings' 'Update and Security' screen is when I got the Installation Failed message. I give up!.....Life is too short!
Incidentally, I have installed the update on three other computers with no problems whatsoever.

I have never tried to install manually any major upgrade for Windows. I have always waited until it was offered and I don't recall having any problems at all. I had not received the offer of 2004 until October 30th, even though it was released in May. It went smoothly and took less than 90 minutes from start to finish. I was offered version version 20H2, released in October, on Dec. 2nd and it took just a very few minutes from start to finish. Of course time involved depends on the speed of your internet connection so personally I believe that shouldn't even be noted here. There obviously is some reason your wife's computer will not take this update. How old is this computer? Did it originally come with Windows 10 installed? Are all of your drivers up to date? I ask these questions because according to Microsoft's Lifecycle FAQ; A device might not be able to receive updates if the device hardware is incompatible, lacking current drivers, or otherwise outside of the Original Equipment Manufacturers' ("OEM") support period. Not all features in an update will work on all devices," These two latest "upgrades" 2004 and 20H2 really offer no major changes in the OS so if the computer is not capable of installing these then don't worry about them. Windows 10 v.1909 will continue to receive updates, Without 2004 or 20H2, until May of 2021.

Hi Judy The update was offered and I did not try to manually install it. My connection download speed is approx. 70mbps and has never been a problem. The connection to my router was via Ethernet lead. I have used the same connection for 2 of the other computers I mentioned with no problems. I have also installed 20H2 with no problems on all three.
My wifes laptop is approx. 2 years old with Windows 10 installed and seems to function perfectly in all ways except when it comes to upgrades. I will repost later with the specs for the machine.

You should check drivers for sure. Also, if it is offered again totally turn off your Norton's, everything connected to it. It is definitely known to cause upgrade failures.

I have seen this recommended on a couple other forums. Follow steps as recommended.
