What is a good data recovery program to use on a desktop computer?
I have two Hdd that the computer see but tell me the folder is empty, yet the computer shows that the drives are half full.
Just upgraded the computer with a new mother board, CPU, memory and a new (to me) graphics card, don't think that is the problem.
Thought I was a RTX3080 graphics card when I unwrapped the Christmas present. The box said RTX3080 but when I open the box the card inside was smaller than the cut out that holds the card in place. My son after he stopped laughing told me it was his one year old graphic card. He kept the RTX3080 for himself. Still I'm happy with the newer graphics card as it is a big upgrade from my seven year old card. Sorry a bit off subject.
I see lots of free data recovery programs online but not sure which one is good or safe to use, any suggestion would be great.
Thanks, Craig

I'm not sure a "good data recovery program" exists. Before we begin that conversation tell us more about the old drives and your new upgraded computer.Do you have backups of these hard drives?
Old Drives: What make, model and size are they? What operating system were they running under? Where they operating properly in the old computer configuration?
Upgraded computer: How did you do the upgrade? What operating system is the upgraded computer using? If you replaced the motherboard, ram, memory and graphics card did Windows validate the license. Are you using the old hard drives in the updated computer? What hard drive does the upgraded computer boot from. Does the upgraded computer boot?
What have you done to try to solve the problem?

The old HDD drives are extra drives that are removable, they slide into a slot on top the the computer cabinet. One drive is a Hitachi Deskstar 750GB, the other drive is a WD 300GB drive, both drive worked on the old computer the last time I used them 8 or 9 months ago. They are just back up drives for my back up drives. So there shouldn't be anything on them I really need but want to double check to be sure if possible. The old computer was running Windows 10 pro as is the new computer set up and I did validate the software after reinstalling on the new "C" drive. Only thing tried so far was mapping the drives, the computer sees them but can't find anything on the drives. Never had problems like these with my old 8088 CPU computer.

Backups of backups that's good. I would tend to agree that there is a good chance they will not contain anything important. I have never had the need to attempt to recover files but have heard that Recuva may be one to try. www.ccleaner.com/recuva

I have used Recuva to successfully restore deleted photos. I have this EaseUs program installed on my machine but have not needed to use it. EasUS Free Data Recovery Wizard will recover up to 2 GB. They give the option to upgrade. If you had more than the free allowance at least you would know the data is recoverable. EaseUs I believe is a reliable brand so may be worth trying. The interface looks very good to me.

Tried both neither worked, all they found was a OS and a partition. So I'll just dump those two drives and push my son to hook up the server he built. He said he built it for me but I think he only says that so he can get to to pay for it out of my pocket. Anyway my photos are still backed up on the main drive in the computer and two external drives, so I should be good to go for now.
Thanks for the help, I am keeping one of the programs on my computer just in case.
Again thanks, Craig

Are you certain the files are not ‘hidden’ ?
Open File Explorer and click File in the left upper corner. Then, choose Change folders and search options.
Go to View tab and check Show hidden files, folders, and drives. Click the Apply and the OK button.

Files shouldn't be hidden,as I don't even know how to hide files. There are a large number of files that are automatically hidden. These are generally not files that you should be changing, deleting, or moving around. These are often important operating system-related files. It really is normal not to interact with hidden files. You CAN unhide these files and in this case it might be a good idea so you can see if you do have any hidden files/folders. Remember, most computers automatically do have some files hidden.
To show hidden files do the following:
Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
Select View > Options > Change folder and search options.
Select the View tab and, in Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives and OK.
Remember that most users should keep hidden files hidden. If you need to show hidden files for whatever reason, it's best to hide them again when you're done using them.
