Have you completely shut down and rebooted? Also are you sure that you have not accidentally turned it off by hitting the F1 Sound Off Key? Top row on keyboard.
I have done that several times in the past, especially when my computer and therefore my keyboard was new so the layout was a slightly different size. Once I got used to it then it never happened again unless I did it on purpose.

I'll try the reboot. My F1 key is a ? mark. I think my sound key is F5 but it didn't help. Thanks DICK

Anytime you have a problem the first thing to try is a reboot. I have looked at multiple pictures of HP Envy Laptop Keyboards, I "think" that is what you have, and it looks to me like the volume keys are F-9, F-10, F-11 with the one that turns off the audio F-11. On all the pictures I looked at the F-5 key had no designation whatsoever.

I have the exact same keyboard on our two HP laptops and you are correct Judy, the F11 key turns the sound off.

Tried the reboot--no help. My F5 key has the same emblem as your F11 key. Should the red light be on to indicate sound on? I've tried it both ways with no luck.

I have a Dell which has a different set up and I do not have a light indicating sound on or off but based on your picture you mean on that F5 key I would think that if there IS a red light on then that would indicate that the sound is off. According to your print screen the sound ON key would likely be F7 which shows a "speaker picture" with a + sign.
You should also have a sound indicator in your system tray, is there one there? You can turn the sound off and on right there too by just clicking the sound icon there. See Attachments

Judy, I would think that the F7 key with speaker picture and + sign is the increase volume key.

Have you checked to see if your sound/audio drivers are present in Device Manager?

I believe that what you said is that F7 is the 'sound ON' key? Is it not F5 which is the 'sound ON' key?

No. I believe on Acker's picture, sound On is F7, which is what I said in posts #6, 8 and you yourself said in post #7
To Acker, since this is a brand new computer then take it back where you bought it and have them take a look. It IS under warranty and if you do too much playing around with it then it could void your warranty.

Sorry Judy, There appears to be some confusion here. What I said in post #7 was that F7 is the increase volume key, F5 is sound on, sound off. I also suggest that F6 is volume decrease.
I just tried it on one of my HP laptops and that is exactly what happens. In my laptop's case, the keys are F9, F10 and F11 but the symbols on the keys are the same.
P.S. I really must clean that keyboard!!!

I give up. He needs to take the computer back to Best Buy where he bought it just a little over one month ago, because it IS under warranty, and let them figure it out. If he does too much playing around then he could possibly void his warranty.
I am working with a Dell, both he and you Barney are working with HP's and the pictures on your keys and mine are totally different.

In device manager it shows that all audio devices are working properly. I guess it's back to Best Buy tomorrow. Thanks DICK

Aker, have you used the windows 10 audio troubleshooter .?
The easiest way to access the sound troubleshooter is via All Settings/System and then choose Sound from the left side list.

FIXED!!!!!!! Without Best Buy.
Clicked on sound icon in task bar and noticed the 'up arrow' (which I have never noticed before on any of my puters) and up came the fix (see attachment). Changed it and now have sound. Full disclosure: My wife did it!
Thanks DICK
