My buddy just had this icon show up on his laptop and does not know what it is or where it came from. I have been searching myself and have not found anything on it yet. Does anyone here know what it is?
Thank you, Paul

I would concur with Budgall's thoughts that the laptop is not connected to WiFi for the Internet .... the large circle (world/globe symbol) would appear to represent the World Wide Web and the X in the circle signifying not connected with the WWW/Internet..... Perhaps your friend could hover his cursor over the top of the image or do a right mouse click over it to see what description shows up .... But since the laptop likely automatically connects to friend's WiFi they could reboot the computer and let it auto connect to their WiFi, or reboot the Wifi router/Modem and let the laptop reconnect.... Or, go into the Settings and look at WiFi listing to see if connected to their router... You don't mention whether they can connect to their email or a browser when that symbol appears, so not a lot of info for anyone to go on.
Easiest thing to do with unknown "hiccups " is to shut down the laptop and restart it to make the blips in connection go away.....
Various manufacturers have their own symbols and not knowing what brand of laptop or the operating system only allows guesses as to what is going on and precedes doing any research for the symbol.....

It is exactly that icon that shows when my wi-fi is not connected as shown in my first attachment .It shows on my Taskbar though. If I connect then I get the icon showing on my second attachment.

Thank you for that Judy. I spoke with my buddy again yesterday and he said it did not matter if he was connected or not. The icon stayed on his desktop and there was no action he could take as far as right or left clicking on it. He gets off work Friday morning and will come by with it later in the day or Saturday. I'll see what I come up with. Thanks to all for replying. I will let you know something after he comes by.

Don't know how I missed your post Bigtoe. Thank you for the kind reply and info. As I told jholland1964, I will know much more when he brings it over this weekend.

Have him shut off the computer totally. Then shut down the Modem/Router and let it set for a couple of minutes then restart the Modem/Router and let it settle down. Then restart the computer. and see what happens.

I believe this is a pop up notification from Avira. Have your buddy close Avira and it should disappear. If he’s using windows 10 the built in Microsoft Defender is adequate and Avira can be uninstalled.

If the icon is appearing in the notification area of the taskbar it means the PC is not connected to the internet, as others have said. If the icon is appearing on the true desktop it is something else - I believe Everton may be correct re it being related to or generated by Avira.

Paul D If you look closely the icon posted has a x whereas the Notification bar Globe icon for no wifi connection has just a single stroke. \ Also the icon in question has x’s orbiting it. I dont think it is any part of windows. Hopefully paulh has managed to solve the problem as he has not returned.

Shot in the Dark: Does your buddy have Libreoffice installed on his computer? If so it could be signaling a Libreoffice update is available.

Super Sleuthing Eve. Hopefully, paulh will return to see the definitive answer. He's not been back in 12 days.

Super Sleuthing Eve. Hopefully, paulh will return to see the definitive answer. He's not been back in 12 days. Suggestion for Paulh ...... Just something to think about, but there was a time that Avira Free AV was highly recommended here and other sites as a very nice Anti-Virus program and the Windows AV program was "not so much" .... Perhaps, since it is most likely that Avira is a culprit here, Paulh you might suggest to your friend to just delete that program and then be sure that the free Windows Microsoft AV program that is now extremely highly rated and comes with his Win 10 operating system should be then activated.... It provides outstanding protection for Windows machines and protects as well as or better than Avira does and he likely won't be bothered by that "worldly icon with the X" that is perplexing him/her.... And, if the icon never appears again they will be 100% assured that like the link posted by Everton suggesting that it is most likely a hiccup caused by Avira component... Anyways, just a suggestion for Paulh to consider whenever he returns..... Hopefully his friend will agree to do so, and sometime in the future they could always go back to Avira Free should they really feel that is necessary, but most folks here have gone away from Avira for Windows Defender..

So sorry for the long absence everybody. I had to go to Arizona in a hurry and just returned Wednesday. A minor family scare but everything is fine. Back to the query---The day before finding out I was going to be leaving, my friend brought his laptop over to me and after doing some checking around and not finding anything specific, I ran the full set of security scans (SAS, Malwarebytes, and CCleaner)and after rebooting, it was gone. Maybe just luck but he has not had it return as far as I know. I did check your link about Avira Everton and saved it for future use as he does use Avira. Thanks so much for everyones interest in and replies to my thread.
