Go to Settings > General > [device] Storage.
Scroll to the Recommendations section to see tips.
If you still need more space after you use the recommendations, you can delete apps and content that you don't need. Scroll to the list of apps, then select any app to see how much space it uses.
Tap Delete App. Some apps, such as Music, let you delete parts of their documents and data. You can redownload your purchased apps and content again later.
If you see Other or System Data in the graph that shows your device storage, you don't need to take action to change them. Instead, delete apps and content that you don't need, and use the recommendations.

Linda, some good advice to follow from Judy which will help you easily clean up unneeded items from your iPhone to free up storage space... I'm guessing you have a 32 or maybe a 64GB sized hard drive and if you take a lot of photos it's quite easy to fill up a lot of that space with large sized pictures and videos.... And if you do a lot of social media activity on it filling up a hard drive is extremely easy to do. But before you delete items, do you know if you have activated iCloud storage (5 GB free from Apple) so you have access to any items you may find you really wanted to save or have access to after you do the cleanup steps? Really critical to have important things like settings and important data backed up/saved so you have access to it all in case your phone needs to get replaced (theft, loss, damaged, etc) and you want to use your saved settings and data to install on the new replacement or updated phone so you'll be comfortable from the get-go with the new phone. For instance, I use 3 Apple devices and my wife uses 2 devices and each have tons of photos going back many years and important data so I elected to pay the $0.99/month to Apple for the extra 50GB of iCloud storage for each of us and have backup settings active on all 5 devices (3 cents a day is pretty easy to manage on just about any type of a budget ). Having all our data and settings saved worked great for me to set up 2 new phones and 2 new iPads at Christmas so we didn't miss a beat when using them; it's a personal choice and you may find the 5GB free as well as backing up to a computer just as convenient for yourself. You can easily find in your settings how much free space you have on your iPhone and look to see if you are using the free iCloud storage space available at no charge to you. Here's a nice article giving step by step directions on looking up your available used/free space on your phone and easy directions to back up and to clean up your phone: backlightblog.com/iphone-storage-fullI just wanted to be sure you understood how important it is to back up your iPhone (and all devices for that matter) so all the critical data and information is readily available to you BEFORE you do any deleting of material. Have fun with your phone (really a small computer with an app that lets you make phone calls). We only have cell phones, no landline, and for us being sure all our critical data is backed up and available for any type of emergency is quite important. Your phone is likely just as important to you as well.... It's really easy to do the few steps and I'm sure you'll get quite a sense of accomplishment after you finish doing so safely with no regrets of not having access to something important that accidentally got deleted....

Using icloud Photos is excellent advice, make sure “Optimize iPhone Storage” option is checked.
Just a couple of things to be aware of, and you probably are - if you delete a photo from your iphone it will be deleted from your icloud photos as well. When you delete photos on the iphone they remain on the device for 30 days so will still be taking up space. To permanently delete Open the Photos app. Tap Albums > Recently Deleted. Then, tap Select > Delete All. With your phone 97% full apps will not work efficiently and updates will not be possible. I have mine set to automatically offload apps but you can manually do each one if you wish .
