For years I have had a desktop as my main computer (HP 750 GB HD, 6 GB ram bought in 2010) It was connected through ethernet. It served me well, but is no longer serviceable. I used it for personal use only. Internet for communicating with people, searching out things, but I had a lot of information on it. Nothing fancy. Was connected through Ethernet cable, using Hughes Net which is the only service available to me.
I hope someone will please help me with suggestions for replacing this unit. Desktop or laptop best? What best to have on it? Ports? I need a larger screen because eyesight isn’t the greatest. So if laptop, I will probably need an extra monitor.
Biggest problem is I don’t have a large budget to work with. I know black Friday is on us, so maybe something would be available there. Any help would be appreciated. I know I will need a whole new setup and has to be adequate for my needs. Thanks for any help you can send my way. Char

What stores are available to you Char? Wal-Mart, BestBuy? That would help people looking for you. It's hard to advise without knowing where you would be shopping.

If your monitor still works, You can use it on your laptop. No matter what size laptop you get.

I believe you would normally get more bang for your buck with a desktop rather than a laptop.
If you will save the information you mention is on your old pc to a thumb drive, then you could easily transfer it to you new pc.

Thanks for every ones input. We live in NC and have a walmart and staples close. Best Buy about 50 miles away. But what about ordering online, Amazon-Dell or any others you might think of ?? I have my old monitor but that is also from 2010, but still works. If I would get a better deal for the money I’m fine with a desk top. My old computer was really getting slow, seemed to take forever to bring things up, but I also think part of the problem is my server (which they of course say its my old computers) I know it will now mean Windows 11 which will be new to me. I know I will have to consider new software programs as everything I work with now is 2007 and before and my Win. 10 needs to configure everything before it brings it up. I figure I need more power somewhere??? Any suggestions on what I may need is greatly appreciated. Char

Online of course is an easy way to go and it may give you a better price. I have added WalMart and Staples link but once you get to those you'll have to choose your local store. DellHP
Amazon WalMartStaples

Here is the one I personally would think would do you fine as is from Dell. Dell has been my preferred for many years now. And I generally choose them as displayed without making any changes Dell Inspiron 24 All-In-One

Judy again thank you for this information. I think I would be more comfortable with a desk top. Would you or anyone else be so kind as to make suggestion on a desk top. Thank you so much. Char

Judy again thank you for this information. I think I would be more comfortable with a desk top. Would you or anyone else be so kind as to make suggestion on a desk top. Thank you so much. Char Char the one I linked to IS a desktop. It is not a laptop. It is an all in one computer. An all-in-one computer is a type of computer that integrates the computer components, such as the CPU, monitor, and speakers, into a single unit. It occupies a smaller footprint than a desktop computer based on a computer tower, and also uses fewer cables but you can not carry it around like a laptop. I chose that because it has a large 24 inch monitor. So it includes everything. If you want an tower then you also have to buy a monitor too which adds to the cost. The all-in-one is all included on ONE price so that is the only way it is really similar to a laptop. I was trying to keep the price down for you but give you a bigger monitor which you said you need. Plus you wouldn't have that big heavy tower and all the additional cables you get with a tower, monitor, speakers. All that said I would recommend a Dell. Go though their link and look for Desktop Deals button at the top of the link I gave you

I have been using an All-In-One HP computer and really like it, if this is any help. On the rare occasion I want to move it it is so easy to transport just the one piece. Plus I like the large screen size. It stands up like a photo frame. I would certainly choose one without a tower again. This is a photo of mine open at this page. Click on it to enlarge. It is also a touch screen but I always forget to use it !

If you are happy with your current monitor, then I suggest getting a tower. You probably will have more options for ports than with an all in one.

One thing though Phil, the monitor is 14 years old so it's lifespan is "iffy" at best. She has poor eyesight so the current 14 year old monitor may not be as good as she thinks. Char is well over 80 and she prefers a desktop. But this doesn't mean she has to go with one with a tower which is why Eve and I recommended to her a good option, easily used and everything brand new and it is not a laptop. She just does very basic computing, no gaming or large graphics work or anything like that.

Thank you Judy, Everton & Phil Thank you so much for your replies. I will check out the all in one again. Concern if enough ports, usbs ect. I would hook up a Logitech keyboard, separate trackball, slim portable storage, DVD R/W, at minimum off the top of my head. Everton from the picture do you not have your all in one on a stand? Thank you all for your input. Char

Char, different brands will have different stands but here is a photo of how mine stands up. The angle can be adjusted. You can also see the DVD/CD player on the side . On the opposite side are USB ports and a photo card slot. The other USB slots etc are on the back.

Thank you Judy and Everton for you input. Everything you pass on to me is a big help to my understanding things.
Everton, appreciate you showing me the pictures showing the DVD/CD player on one side and USB ports on the other and back. I haven’t seen that before, everything has been on the back of the all-in-ones. Also most that you don’t make choices on do not have 1 TB HD which would really be a plus.
Anything anyone can pass my way is much appreciated. Char

I checked out the dell site. Black Fri Top Deals Inspiron Desktop $749.99. Would someone please check this out and tell me if this sound like a good Deal??
Would the Dell 24 Monitor SE2425H $69.99 work with this desktop? Doesn’t list speakers, so would I get the sound OK? (concerned because I tried an older monitor with my Dell Laptop Inspiron 15 3000 series using a converter from HDMI port to VGA and I get a picture, but no sound). This should be my last venture for a computer in my lifetime, and I can’t afford to make a mistake. Hope someone will help me with this. Thanks so much Char

Yes, monitor looks fine but yes, you would need speakers. I would suggest you actually TALK to Dell, tell them what you want, stick to your guns. and they most definitely will set you up just fine. You can call them OR chat with a sales person and yes, it is a real person you chat with. I have bought several computers like that and I also have called them to purchase. They are very nice and do work with you just fine. Tell them specifically what you want and if needed your maximum spending amount. They are very good to work with.

Judy thank you for your quick reply. I did talk to someone at Dell but he wasn’t very helpful. I have an older set of speakers that have a USB connection plus a green (input/output?) plug, but don’t know if it can work with the set up ? I’ll try a chat or call again and see if they can be more helpful. (also if they speak better English) needless to say I have hearing aids plus not the best sight. As always I always appreciate any input from any on world tech. Char

Those old speakers will not work with the new computer you will have to get the speakers that will work with the computer. This is one reason Eve and I suggested an All -In- One computer rather than one with the tower. They are what they say, All-In-One.
