Setting up a new computer Good afternoon everyone. I will possibly get my new computer tomorrow.(Dell Inspiron Desktop/ Dell S2425H Monitor) Looking forward to it and dreading it. I did order the Microsoft Office Home 2024 with it, also they didn’t have the Monitor SE2425H on sale any more, so ordered the S2425H which comes with speakers, so two less thing to worry about. I think security is my next order of business. Win. Defender Anti Virus / Please direct me to free sites for the rest I need , if they are still out there. Also everything I need to do to get me started. Back up program suggestions? Thanks to every one Char

Windows Defender, which is built in, is more than enough. Likelty you will be offered a commercial anti-virus program like Norton or something like that, say NO. You do not need it, even if they offer x number of months free, say NO. I have used Windows Defender on my Windows 11 since I got it, three years ago and have had no worries whatsoever, no infections, nothing. I also don't use any other security program like we used to recommend, Superantispyware or any others, no need. So don't worry about those.

I have been using Windows Defender on my Windows 10 for about 6 years and have had no problems. I use it and Spyware Blaster as well as Malwarebytes which are all free. You can download them from Major Geekes for Free. www.majorgeeks.com/

Mr Bill & Judy, Thank you for your reply. I did as you suggested and spoke with someone at dell and they gave me a quote which I took. They removed the free trial on Microsoft 365 because I ordered Microsoft office home. (that hurt the budget). I told him I didn’t want the free trial for McAfee but he told me it couldn’t be removed. ? I know it is no cost, but I really didn’t want it on there. Asked just what the display port was and he told me to look it up on google (that really helped me) Had enough trouble understanding him as it was. Sure he didn’t appreciate my asking questions especially when I had trouble understanding him even though I told him I was old and asking for help. They need to have help for the older generation who are hard of hearing and have trouble understanding some people. (my disappointment with most companies) I have no problem with any nationality, just that I can’t understand them. Thanks for everyone’s help. Char

The display port is where you will hook up your monitor. I had to get an adapter to connect the display port and USB plug from my monitor. I'm not sure why you need Microsoft Office when there are free office suites to download.

Phil, she knows about free office suites but would prefer not to change to another as she is very used to MS Office and is able to purchase it and that is what she chose to do.

Char You can take McCrappy off when you get the machine home. Just uninstall it from within itself. Easy to do. Then reboot and go from there. You will have tons of Windows 11 updates to do. Keep doing them till there are no more. Some updates require certain updates before others. Just let MS do them the way they want them done.

Thanks so much for your replies. Phil thanks for the explanation about the display port. The new monitor has a HDMI cord and I don’t know if that works in the display port. Haven’t investigated that far yet. I do have the Soft Maker Free Office 2021 on my laptop but even though I have had it awhile I still cannot figure some of it out and end up reverting to my old MS & MS Works. It did hurt the budget to get Microsoft 2024 and hope I won’t regret it. I guess it boils down to, hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
Mr Bill thanks for your advice. Will get rid of McAfee once I get things up and working. Right now my mind is blank even about getting the Windows updates. Hope these things come back when I get into setting the computer up. Been awhile since I had to do this. I checked the Major Geeks site. I think the Malwarebytes they listing said for Win 10 so would it work for Win 11? Judy as usual thank you for all your help. Would someone give me some suggestions of a backup program please? I hope to start on this new project tomorrow so wish me luck. I hope I can remember how to hook up my printer . Char

Windows 11 has a built-in backup program, as does Windows 10. I am using 10 but have not used the built-in backup. Someone else may have an opinion about it.
The one I use is Aomei Standard which I find very easy to use. I back up to external drives. There is a paid version as well which has more advanced features and is claimed to be faster. I am happy with the free one www.aomeitech.com/ab/standard.html
My second backup is Ashampoo Backup Free which I use less frequently as an extra precaution. www.ashampoo.com/en-us/backup-free

Char, I would strongly advise that you hold off purchasing anything else for the computer until it arrives. My experience with purchasing through Dell using their online chat OR via telephone is when they sell you something it comes with everything needed to use with what you have purchased. If the HDMI cord is anything like those I have here, they all fit into the computer towers without anything extra needed.

Judy the computer and monitor have arrived. Someone please I want to use the play port for the monitor. so as Phil says I need an adapter. Monitor has a cord with HDMI at both ends. So am I correct that I need a play port adapter which would be female to go in that port on the computer and the other end also has to be female to take the end from the monitor card? If someone would go to amazon and direct me to the right adapter I would really be grateful. Thanks Char
Another question What things usually uses a HDMI port??? And what items would usually use a play port?? being I have never even heard of a play port before.

Thanks Char Char, I am sorry, I have absolutely no idea what you mean by the "play" port so I cannot advise you. In all my years of owning numerous computers I have never heard of a "play" port.
We don't know exactly which computer you purchased. All you said was, "(Dell Inspiron Desktop/ Dell S2425H Monitor)", that tells us virtually nothing about the computer because there are two models of Inspiron Desktop Tower computers, if that is what you purchased.
Regular Tower
and a Small Tower
BOTH of them have HDMI Ports on the BACK of them so why would you want to invest in some sort of adaptor when it clearly is not needed. In order to plug in the computer you have to go to the back of the computer to attach the power cord for the tower and while you are there you can also plug in the HDMI cord for the monitor.
If you had needed an adaptor the Dell sales person would have told you. Look at these pictures I have placed an arrow on each picture showing you where the HDMI port happens to be. THEY ARE THERE for sure. The first picture is the REGULAR TOWER and the next one is the SMALL TOWERAttachments:

Judy sorry for the confusion. The desktop computer is only listed as Inspiron Desktop Model 3030. When I first went on to order it didn’t offer 1 TB SSD. When I added that it changed a couple a couple other things, but still lists it just as Inspiron Desktop on the quote sheet. It looks like you bottom picture.
When I talked to the second person at Dell and asked about the Play Port, he said it was for the monitor. This is where my confusion began. Thinking it all through I’m thinking the monitor hooks up with the HDMI port, and if you wanted a second monitor you would need an adapter for whatever end the monitor had. So I will just forget it is there until a need arises for it. I had never heard of a play port before either. Sorry I don't know how to do an attachment. Only paper that came with the tower was a small picture which shows one cord going from the monitor to the top section of the tower. One cord broken (with like a lightening strike between) going to the bottom section of the tower, which is even more confusing. I have never gotten a computer where they didn't have set instructions enclosed. Appreciate all the help from everyone. I'll be back as I get further along. Char

Unless I am wrong about you Char, I doubt that you use two monitors and if you do then you are more able and advanced than I ever will be. So plug your monitor into that HDMI port and you should be very "good to go". As for Windows Updates all of those are generally automatic. They will just keep updating automatically until there are no more. Just follow the prompts given. Some will require reboots, usually done automatically while you just sit and watch. AFTER all of those are complete is when you can then get things working the way YOU want them working. And you CAN adjust things to look pretty much like you are used to seeing. So DON'T Panic, we all will help you with that. Now hook up that new computer and "let her rip!!!"

The most recent pc that I got from Dell had a display port (I think that is what she is calling a play port) If that is what is on her new computer she will need an adapter because the HDMI cable will not fit into the display port.

I had hoped to get things moving today, but when I asked hubby for help it was a no go. So hoping for tomorrow.
Phil you are completely right. It is a display port. So sorry for my mistake; I will forget about that for now and use the HDMI port for the monitor. I am so looking forward to getting a larger screen so I don’t have such trouble reading things. As ever thank you. Char

I am just guessing here but I am betting that you don't use multiple monitors, don't use your computer for gaming, design, or multimedia production. I am betting that you are like I am and use your computer for surfing the web, visiting sites like this one, sending email, maybe reading a newspaper or two maybe visiting Facebook or playing some very simple games, nothing fancy. In other words, nothing fancy. If that is the case then the HDMI port will serve you just fine.
