My neighbor brought his computer to me today because it will not power on. When you hit the power button, it tries to power up but then immediately shuts off. I tested the power supply and all voltages were good except the -5. Just for the heck of it, I put a new cmos and cleaned and re-seated the memory which did not help. The motherboard does not show any signs of overheating.
What else might I check?
Thank you, Paul

Thanks Judy. I will get it back from him tomorrow and try the paperclip test. As for the other things in the link, I already did them with my PS tester and all are within limits except the -5 which I do not think that motherboard needs. I think I will also try a new power switch if he will leave it with me for the day.

I found the info on wikihow, their info is usually "right on" but that's about as far as I can go. I'm sure there are a couple others at least with true hardware knowledge who can possibly give more valuable info. I am sure they will weigh in if possible. Keep us posted.

I got his computer back this A.M. Just to be sure, I tested the PS again with the paperclip trick from your link. It power up just fine and everything worked. This leads me to believe it is the power button which unfortunately, is on a card along with 2 usb ports and audio ports. Therefor, since it does not have wires like a normal switch that I could change out, he will have to get a new card from Dell if it even available. I have 3 old computers (NOT AS OLD AS HIS THOUGH) that I would give him a really good deal on if he is interested.
Thank you for your help Judy and for the link you posted.

You're welcome Paul. He definitely should check with Dell, they may have that card, you never know. How old is his computer? Could be replacing the card would cost him more than a new computer. Suggest yours to him, if his is older than three years then chances are it would cost more to fix.

Yes, his is at least 12 years old if not older. The ones I have are all less than 3 years old and will run circles around his. I am thinking of some kind of barter deal with him since he is elderly and on a very tight budget.

It is a miracle it has lasted this long and to have just the power switch fail is truly amazing. For you to offer some sort of barter deal to him Paul is just wonderful. I hope he will be willing to take it. Have a 94 year old Uncle in the same situation and one of my cousin's husband has done the same thing for him & he was just thrilled. My firm belief is we should "pay it forward" when we have been blessed in life. It works!

Just realized if this computer is at least 12 years old then he must be running XP or maybe there is a remote chance he is running Vista but either way both systems have expired and no longer receive updates. Now if he never goes online, well that is different but he certainly should not be going online with either system. Hope he will take your offer.

Yes Judy, he is running XP on it. He said he does very little on line other than e-mail. Even so, I did inform him how dangerous that is. All 3 that I have to offer him are Win 7. I do think he is going to work with me. I do agree with you that when I have been so fortunate in my life and have more than I need, I should help others when I can. I was thinking of asking him to mow my lawn for the rest of this season. I had 3 separate back surgeries earlier this year and am still in the healing process.

I do hope he will take you up on it. Windows 7 is such an easy system, especially after XP. He will be amazed at the difference in speed alone. Even if he has a slow internet, not that I know what he has, but just in general the speed in the newer computers will astound him. I know my Uncle was the first time he turned on the one he was given.
