Helping an elderly friend with laptop. HP stream 14 laptop windows 1o with 32 gig hardrive. Cannot update this machine because it tells me that there are 25 gigs of temporary files locked up and it is low on disc space.. Have tried CCleaner but that does not help . Would someone be kind enough to lead me through getting rid of these files please Thanks

I would suggest checking any MS store apps and uninstalling any not used or needed . Especially significant would be game type apps or streaming apps that may store temp files. Any of them may be reinstalled once their temp files are removed. I believe Skype is a culprit in many instances.

The main cause of the lack of space is this model of computer only has a 32GB non-upgradable eMMC storage chip, really not enough to do much with and eventually people with this type of computer run into pretty much the same thing you have run into. This link talks about how to at least get a bit more space. You might read through and do what this poster, pjc123 did to at least try to keep as much space as possible. It is only post #1 in this thread that I am talking about though he does post more in other replies that could be of help;

I agree with Judy about hard drive space. To find your hard drive info. Press the Windows Key, type in System Information, expand the components section and click on drives. The information about your hard drives should display. Report the displayed info here.
Edit: Looks like Judy and I were both posting at the same time. She found more info about your system and confirmed the lack of disk space. Ignore my request and follow Judy's suggestion.

Sounds like poster there has pretty much the same computer that lester's friend has. Thanks for your replies. I have removed all excess programs and files. I should have mentioned in my post that it is a fairly new machine that she had bought for her by a daughter last Christmas and has never been used so has little or nothing on it. I believe the girl who did the set up had problems with the set up and could have done something to cause the trouble. I read where locked files are usually caused by power failures or turning off the computer during downloads. The computer basically has never been used. I have it working well but cannot download any Microsoft updates because of these 25 gigs of locked files. (according to the update popup). I suppose I could tell her to return the machine as it must be on warranty . Have not read your links yet but will do so to see if they help and thank you.

Please read the links there is important information there. But basically this computer is too small, it really doesn't have the normal hard drive. See here for explanation of exactly what type of storage is on this computer:
Did you use the built in Disk Cleanup ?

Thanks Judy, yes I was aware of most of the points made about the ssd drives and I realize that this is just a cheap laptop with a pitifully small drive. The lady I am trying to help only uses the machine for skype and emails nothing else. The laptop does all this now and although a bit slow does the job. I just want to be able to keep it updated for safety. The problem (I think) is that an aberration has locked 25 gigs of temporary files up and need to be removed. I don't know how to do it manually and C cleaner is not able to do it. I tried to set the computer back to factory setting and save the settings and files but it could not do it because of these locked temp files. I could set it back to factory setting and get rid of all files but the screen is so small and the text so tiny. I have trouble seeing as my eyes are in poor condition and I really do not want to do this unless I have to. If anyone knows how to either unlock these files or remove them I would very much appreciate it. Thanks

Yes Judy I did use the disc cleanup utility and several other options that were given during the attempts at updating but none remove those locked files.

Thanks for the link Phil. I did see that link the other day but it did not help me. This computer has only been used to set up the system for the owner to use. I have tried several times to download windows updates and needed programs like C Cleaner Malwarebytes etc as the computer has been unused since the set-up around Christmastime so I suspect the 25 gigs may have become locked by failed huge Microsoft update bearing in mind there are numerous files and over 25 gigs in the locked folder.

With such a small drive you may have better luck using a linux distro such as the free linux mint cinnamon. You could download the linux iso file on another computer and then create a bootable thumb drive with it. (start with https://) www.linuxmint.com/
If you do this, you can test linux mint from the thumb drive. Using linux mint from the thumb drive is very slow so you will need to be patient. If that is acceptable, then you could format the drive and install linux mint (This speeds things up), thus getting rid of the locked files.
You could also format the drive and re-install windows (Updated) - see (again start with https://) www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10. Expand "Using the tool to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) to install Windows 10 on a different PC " to see how.
The above links seem to work only if you open a new page and start typing the url with https://(then add the link).

Lester did you try uninstalling Skype as suggested in my reply #1 I am so sorry Everton but I must have missed your post. Sorry, no I did not try that I hope you are not upset at me. I will certainly try it tomorrow but would you tell me the reason why you suggest that option as it seems difficult to understand why Skype would cause the problem. That was the only program on the computer when I first started to work on it other than a email program I am signing off now but will surely try it tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion as I know you must have a reason for suggesting it.

Thanks for the suggestion as I know you must have a reason for suggesting it. Not a bit upset! it is a long shot but worth a try. It is something I remember from some time ago where Skype had generated a large amount of temp files that would not delete. I can not recall the details but have found this similar scenario windowsreport.com/windows-10-temporary-files-wont-delete/Scroll right down to Solution 7 possibly some other solutions may be relevant also.

Thank you Evert Tried to find Skype in the add remove list but it is nowhere to be seen. Typed Skype into the search of add remove and nothing. Searched in the computer and the Skype program opens up. Have no time to look at it further right now but will do more later.

Skype may be found in Start; Apps rather than Programs.

Thank you Evert Tried to find Skype in the add remove list but it is nowhere to be seen. Typed Skype into the search of add remove and nothing. Searched in the computer and the Skype program opens up. Have no time to look at it further right now but will do more later. There are two types of Skype - in the past it was always downloaded from the website. Now there is a version that is obtained from the Windows Store and as Phil just said it is in the apps section. As this computer is quite new this is likely the one that is installed. If you follow the instructions in the link I gave you for solution #7 you should find it - i.e.....go to settings by clicking on the notifications icon next to the clock and clicking 'All Settings"
From there select "Apps" and a window will open like the one in my attachment.(click on it to enlarge) There you can uninstall Skype.
Alternatively there must be an icon somewhere on the start menu, the taskbar, or the desktop for Skype as you say your friend uses it, so there must be an icon somewhere for her to open it. Locate that and right click on it and there is the option to uninstall right there - could not be simpler If uninstalling Skype does remove the Temp files that you can not delete then you can do the updates and then if there is sufficient space after that you can reinstall Skype from the Windows Store. As has been mentioned before the small drive in this machine makes it borderline whether or not it can support Windows 10 and a few additional applications but you can try.

Thank you for you suggestions Everton. I did manage to get the computer updated by trying several times following various suggestions from the update itself and by installing a 16 gig usb drive during the update. The computer is running fine and is reasonably fast. I told my friend of your suggestion to remove Skype and then restore it and she wants to get her daughter to do that. It was her daughter who originally set the machine up so we will see if it gets rid of those locked files. By the way I did remove Microsoft Office too as she will not be using it.. Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

Glad you got the update completed. Hopefully the 25Gb of locked Temp files can be removed because the same thing will happen with the next update if they are still there.
Just another thing to consider :)You did clear the cache of whichever browser was being used ? If it is Edge there are a total of 9 boxes to be checked to clear all browsing data. The first 3 are the most important to clear. I have mine configured to always clear all checked data items each time the browser is closed. (Click on 'Choose What To Clear" in "Clear browsing Data" within Edge Settings)

Thanks Everton, I had not cleared the cache on Edge as I figured being a new computer there would be little on it, I just cleared the cache and browsing history and it made no difference. There is still only four and a half gigs of space left. I am taking the computer back to her later today and she will get her daughter to remove and replace Skype. and see if that worls. Thanks again
