Well, I started this conversation on the Worldstart board where I've been posting as black_box. My new Win 10 laptop will be here tomorrow and I was looking for a way to back up My Documents and Program Files, then recover them on the laptop. The free software I'm using, Macrium Reflect, couldn't do it Karen's Replicator was mentioned, but is not having luck on Win 10 and Syncbackfree does not work with XP.
Paul D suggested to Just use the Windows copy function. Copy the folders from the XP machine to a thumb drive, then take the thumb drive to the W10 machine, set up a target folder (let's call it XP data, for example) and copy the XP folders from the thumb drive as sub-folders of XP data.
The bolded bit IS important. As you are copying standard folders a direct copy would likely result in a jumble of new and old data in those two folders on the W10 machine. And that's another reason not to use backup software.
Crash Override suggested that I also bring the matter here. Nice to see so many familiar names and look forward to anymore suggestions.
