Can someone explain to me what an unlocked phone means when purchasing a new phone? Here is my example. I have ATT service that uses GSM network. If the phone is unlocked people tell me you can use it on say Verizon which is CDMA network. From what I read this is not correct as you can't use a GSM phone on any CDMA network and vice versa. I think unlocked in my case means I can use my phone on ATT and TMobile only as they run on GSM. If mine was locked to ATT then it could only be used on ATT and not even T Mobile. Am I correct? Thanks.

I think you're correct, uffbros. An unlocked CDMA phone should be able to subscribe to any CDMA carrier, just as an unlocked GSM phone should be able to subscribe to any GSM carrier. And yes, locked means it's permanently tied to a particular carrier.
