Another warning about ccleaner and changes recently made to the program. Be sure to watch the video included in the link. I don't use the program very often but still think it is a good program just be aware of the changes being made to it and adjust your use of the program based of your comfort level with the changes. www.makeuseof.com/tag/stop-using-ccleaner-windows/

Thanks for the info budgall. I will continue to use CCleaner. I have no setting anywhere in the program to automatically update or even to be notified of available updates. The only things I allow to automatically update is Windows and my Avira AV program, otherwise everything else I do manually. I use the CCleaner Free version only and many of the items questions are not part of the Free version. We all must be vigilant for sure. Again thanks for the notification.

There is the option during CCleaner install of the free version to be notified of updates, and in Options/Settings you can check the box to be informed of updates.
I uncheck the option for them to collect data. Yes it is checked by default, but CCleaner is certainly not the first app to do such a thing nor will it be the last. This emphasizes the importance of checking settings for any installs. The forced install without permission is something I can see the sense of - if someone has installed an old version maybe they should be pleased to be brought up to date - assuming the latest version would be more secure. I know many people don't like things happening without consent but personally I would not mind in this particular situation.
The monitoring issue was fixed fairly swiftly due to public concern.
Yes, they distributed Malware - because they were hacked - again not the first company to have this happen to them and it was dealt with. As stated in the MUO article "Thankfully, the company caught it before a widespread attack could happen." So - be thankful, not tell people the program has 'gone rogue'
I have always enjoyed MUO but I find this article over the top - scaremongering, and quite unfair.
I don't find the CCleaner 'obnoxious' or 'shady' as it stands at present and think they are very strong words for the article to have used.
I have installed the latest version 5.47.6716 without any qualms.
The article states such programs are not needed and then goes on to recommend BleachBit as a replacement.
Just my opinion
