My wife's laptop started running so slowly after one of the latest Windows Updates (not sure which one) that I thought I was going to have to either throw it in the rubbish bin or remove the updates until I found the culprit.
I opened Task Manager/Startup and found that Cortana was running in the background constantly.
I disabled Cortana and the laptop is now a flying machine!
Incidentally, my desktop has the same update history but no Cortana running in the background.

I turned off Cortana on all my computers the first time I turned them on. I figured I've gotten along without a "personal assistant" for 70+ years why would I need one now? Plus, from what I've found most of the time these things that will make your computer time easier just slows things down.
