The 'C' drive on my desktop is showing red with only approx 5 GB free space left. My 'D' drive which is an SSD, is virtually empty.
How do I go about deciding what, if anything, I can transfer to my 'D' drive?

Make some new directories on drive D: and move files from download, pictures, documents and any other that are used for storage. Clean out old windows update. Windows disk clean up will clear our junk files. Get a bigger drive C:. Downloas Privazer and run it as it will clean up unneeded junk files.

I would "copy" before I would "move". Copy leaves them where they are and you can delete them later. Move and something goes wrong and you may loose what you were moving.

I would appear to have over 15GB on my desktop. Can I do anything about that?

This all is out of my area but of course I am reading along and now I am confused. Your original post says now in this post you say you have 15GB....is this a different computer or is this what you have after doing the suggested cleanups?

Sorry Judy, I should have been a bit clearer. When I say my desktop has over 15GB, I am referring to my desktop folder on my computer.

Two different issues, to me the main concern is freeing up free space on Drive C: so proceed with my earlier suggests and like Mr. Bill suggested copy files not move them

Once I am happy everything is ok, I can delete the files from the external drive. Still unsure which files I can and cannot move though.
Windows Update Cleanup on 'C' drive shows over 4GB can be removed. Is it ok to remove these files?

I routinely delete those update files as soon as I feel the update is not causing any problems.

Getting there!
