I have just followed all the instructions again for clean boot. This time on the 'old' laptop. I click on Disable All and then click on Apply and malwarebytes immediately renables itself. I also disabled everything in Task manager as instructed including Open Shell but when I restart Open Shell is still running!
I am at a loss..

How old is the computer Barney?
I only tried this on the old computer to see if it reacted differently to the newer one. This is exactly the same results which I get on the newer computer.

The computer with the problems is which one? This is terribly confusing. You actually said earlier "Incidentally, our old laptop, which came originally with Windows 7 installed has been upgraded to Windows 8 then 10 and has all the updates to 20H2 installed with no problems whatsoever!" I have no idea what computer really has the problem, whether the old computer is the one referred to earlier or some other computer never mentioned. Please, please stick only with the computer that this thread is about, not some other computer.
So far you really have given no information about what happened with the problem computer and the steps from the HP page I just gave you instead you are talking about an old computer and honestly I don't care or want to know about the old computer. As I have said several times earlier, you absolutely, positively cannot compare computers...an old one, your wife's with the computer with the problem. It cannot be done and should never be done.

Sorry for the confusion Judy. I was merely trying to indicate that my problem with shutting down Malwarebytes etc happens on both computers.

Sorry for the confusion Judy. I was merely trying to indicate that my problem with shutting down Malwarebytes etc happens on both computers. Sorry Barney but that is not what you said you didn't mention Malwarebytes in your last reply where I specifically had asked you about the steps given on the HP Web site. That is not what you answered. I don't care what happens with Malwarebytes, remove it You can always reinstall it. The instructions on the other two links I gave specifically say to turn off or uninstall 3rd Party Security programs. You have not been doing this. You never even mentioned anywhere to begin with that you had Malwarebytes Premium also. Now I wonder what other 3rd party security programs you have. I can't help when I don't have 100% information or if the person I am trying very hard to help doesn't follow the steps, ALL the steps 100%. I asked about the results after doing the steps given on the HP HELP WEBSITE

Have you actually disabled malwarebytes from starting at startup from within the actual program settings ? Also are you using Restart on laptop and not shutting down and restarting.

Hi friends,
Please accept my apologies for leading you on a merry dance over this issue.
I(we) have taken the decision to cut our losses and have ordered a new laptop from Dell UK.
It is an Inspiron 15 3502 which will please Judy as I know she is a Dell aficionado.
It comes with Windows10 S loaded which I will upgrade to Windows 10 Home as soon as possible.
Being delivered Tuesday.
Watch this space!

Updating from 1909 has been a problem for a lot of people. I had a client who was unable to update regardless of what we tried. The problem was solved by creating an installation DVD with the latest version of Windows on it and doing a complete fresh clean install. A lot of work reinstalling software and restoring data but he has not had any problems since the reinstall.
For fun, you may want to try a clean install on the problem computer after you get everything transferred to the new one. If it all works you'll a spare computer to play with.
Enjoy the new computer

New laptop all set up and running. Set up was a breeze because of Dell inbuilt tuition using voice commands.
Updated Windows 10S to Windows 10 Home almost right away. Installed all software and docs etc from old laptop with little effort using an external HD. Connected to my wifi and printer with no problems at all.
Running Open Shell instead of Windows Start.
New machine running like a breeze.

New machine running like a breeze. Super! Yes, Open Shell was released last year to replace Classic Start. Works great. Now I have to say something Barney, I do hope that you will stick with the built Windows Security and not go back to that 3rd party paid program, Nortons 360. As I have said here numerous times I have used nothing else since my first Windows 10 purchase when it was first released. It is excellent, both the av program and the firewall. Both so a superb job. Have never had a single infection or invasion since this became my # 1 protection. Have fun with your new machine!!

Glad to here conversion went well. I agree with Judy, Windows 10 av and firewall are both very good. I switched over to them just after Windows 10 was released and have not been sorry. Enjoy you new computer.
