My wife was helping a friend with a printer problem. They called HP, which after tests with the printer, scanned her computer and told her she had a Clampi problem. They said they could fix but it would take a couple of hours. Friend said 'not now' and she then turned off the computer & printer. Wife came home and asked if I knew anything about it. I "DuckDuckGo"ed it and found lots of nasty info about it. If I get her computer here (my house) is this something I could fix using the programs listed on your "Preliminary Cleanup Steps" thread in "Virus and Malware Help" or do I need some online help program. This is her late husbands computer and she is also not computer savvy. They didn't keep any financial info on his or her computer. Luckily!!!
If I have to use them I found 'fix' sites when I searched Clampi but I don't trust them until someone I trust (New World Tech) verifies they are OK.
Many thanks in advance,
DICK

I have never heard of this before and found no sites I would trust to follow instructions about this. We have no information about this computer, operating system, age of the computer, security programs used, how long the problem has been going on or even what the problem was in the first place, so it is really difficult to give information
Since you are unfamiliar with doing something like this I really would recommend that you take the computer someplace like Best Buy or a good local computer shop and pay them to remove or fix whatever is wrong with the computer.

I have done lots of looking and honestly found nothing about this Clampi trojan except what you have found. With the exception of Kaspersky I am not familiar with any of the sites that come up on searches so I would say you are right not using any of them. I checked on Malwarebytes, Bleeping Computer, Windows 10 Help Forums, WindowsBBS and not one of them even mentions or has any instructions for removal of Clampi. Kaspersky doesn't give any information on removal either.
I personally would like to know what type of scan that HP did that discovered this trojan when supposedly they were helping with printer problem because none of the information given on Kaspersky says anything about causing printer problems.
As I told you yesterday we have little to no information. We have told you many times before, we absolutely cannot offer advice or help with anything without full and 100% complete information. Symptoms exhibited, make and model of computer, operating system, security programs used, and since a printer is involved the model number of the printer and exactly what problems were happening with the printer. Otherwise sorry but until we have all that information there is nothing we can offer or suggest. If anybody offers advice without full knowledge there is a pretty good chance that permanent damage can be done to the computer.

Thanks--I'll be picking the puter up tomorrow I'll try and find more info. DICK I am going out of town until next week and will not have access to a computer so somebody else here will have to help you. I am concerned however since you don't have any information about the computer, the symptoms shown or anything else and you are not familiar with cleaning a machine. Infections like these are very rare today. If you make a mistake then her machine could be toast.
You would be better off taking it to a reputable shop. You don't want to ruin your friend's computer.

Like Judy I have done some research on Clampi but didn't find much info on it. When you get the machine please provide the info Judy requested so we can try to figure out a solution to the Clampi issue. ANy info the HP tech provided could also be a big help. Did the HP tech say what speps he would use to cler the problem.

I'm back. I have been down with something that really kicked my butt. I haven't even looked at her machine. I think I will follow the advice abou her taking the puter to a professional.
I need to go back to my recliner. So thanks to all that offered help.

Thank you for the follow up. I question if the computer owner really had HP on the phone. Why would anyone trying to fix a printer problem scan a computer? I think she had a scammer on the phone. Taking the computer to a professional I think is a good idea. Find a local computer shop, stay away from the Best Buys "Geek Squad" type of repair shops as they cure most computer problems by reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows.

I really agree with Bud. I have worked many times with HP Printer techs via chat and also on the phone and I have never had a single one of them who wanted to scan my computer or even suggest doing so. None of them even half way suggested the problem was with the computer and not the printer. I would really like to know exactly what the tech actually did or suggested. Was a total removal and reinstall suggested or done? That is usually what is suggested when tiny steps cannot be completed. They generally then have the user, after the total removal, is to download the very latest programs and printer driver for the specific printer with the problem. I have never had that not work. I am suspicious for sure. Please report back with exact printer model and all info about the computer and what exactly were the problems experienced with the printer?
