Good morning y'all! I am working on a computer I built for some good friends about 8 years ago. He told me they were on their zoom meeting for church on Sunday when the monitor went blank. Sound and all still worked, just no picture. Their monitor is about 15 years old so my first impression was the monitor went bad. I picked it up from them this AM and when I got home with it I hooked it up to my monitor and the post screen showed up but when it was ready to go to the desktop, the signal dropped and said there was no input. I did this twice with the same results. Before I put another graphics card in it, I was wondering what your thoughts might be.
Thanks,
Paul
I will be going out for a while so it may be this evening before I get back to see your input.

What exactly did you pick up? The entire computer with monitor....only the computer....or only the monitor? Your post is not quite clear on what you hooked up. By saying you installed a new graphics card says you picked up the computer but not the monitor OR you ARE testing the monitor and have same results even with a new graphics card. Did you try the monitor ONLY on your computer? A 15 year old monitor is an OLD monitor says to me it is likely the monitor but I cannot say for sure unless you clarify things.

Back home now. Sorry if I was not quite clear Judy. I have the tower only at my house and not the monitor. I have it hooked up to my monitor and that is what I am getting. I have not changed the graphics card yet but that was going to be my next step unless someone had another idea. I know my monitor is good as my computer has no issues.

Then if it is the tower you have and not the monitor then guess I would go with the graphics card and see if that makes a difference. However, you said the computer itself is 8 years old and the monitor is 15 years old...what Windows version is on the computer? 10 or 7 or 8? Just age itself is likely a factor here. Think you need to decide if you want to be replacing part by part or start with a new computer including monitor.

Thank you Judy. I would suggest a new computer for them but they are both in their late 70's on a fixed income. We became friends years ago through my wife's work at a private practice Dr's office where she would help them navigate the best insurance needs for them and have remained friends since. I try my best to keep them going with this computer by donating my time and very often spare parts I have a couple extra of. I originally put 7 on it and updated it about 3 years ago to 10.. I have some spare graphics cards and even a relatively new used monitor I am willing to donate to them if it will keep them going until they can put some money aside for a new system. I will put the new (used) graphics card in tomorrow and let you know what happens.

I have worked on hundreds of PC's over the years. Unless I am working on one to try to get a virus or malware off of one, I want the whole PC. Seen more times than a few, problems like you have and it really is 2 problems and people question if it was really the graphics card that I replaced and their monitor still don't work. I want the problem to fail with me and not in front of them. Seen this problem also with sound cards as the card and the speakers were both bad. Things like that don't happen often, but it does happen.

Really wonderful what you do Paul. If you have the parts and spare monitor then that is the likely way to go. I do agree with Bill also so be sure to note what he says;
Please keep us posted Paul and God bless you for what you are doing.

Put one of my used graphics cards in and voila! Everything works as it should. Only problem now is the card only has DVI outputs and their monitor only has VGA input. Even the spare monitor I have that I was going to give them only has HDMI input. So it is off to the store to get an adapter cable. I appreciate all of y'alls input and help! You are the best. Thank you,
Paul
