Good day!
I was on satellite internet for 19 years. We have now moved to "town" and have cable internet. My modem has a built in router (which I didn't have before) and it came password protected. Do I need to do anything to make this setup more secure?
I hope I am making sense as this is all new to me. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Rachel. Do you know the router name and password?

I know the network and the password. I think that's right. I was better at this stuff when I was younger.

I won't ask the actual network name or password, just general question here; is it a real name and password or is it something super general like "Network" and the Password is, "Password"? Or is it an actual name or number for the network and a group of numbers and letters for the password? Did the installers give you any written or printed information or did they just tell you and have you write it down?

It is a name attached to the company...ArrisXXX and the password is not generic at all. It seems to be a good password. Something like I would have chosen myself.

I presume, maybe I am wrong, but it is probably an ArrisSurfboard Router. If you know how to change the Network Name and Password to make it easier for you to remember then of course this is your perogative to do so but if you do feel comfortable then you likely can keep things as they are. I did change my Network Name and Password to something more personal since I knew for sure there were several others nearby who use the same carrier that I use. But it is up to you.

Thank you, Judy. I'll leave it alone for now. Still in the moving process and if it's good I'll put it off for a while. I always appreciate your help.

I would recommend that you change the network name and password as I'll bet that the name and password on your router is the same for every customer who has that router and the same internet provider.

I did go ahead and change my network name and password. It was "admin" and "password". A bit more locked down now.

I thought you said before that the password was not generic at all which was why I said if you felt comfortable you could leave them. I would say that both of those would be called generic. Kind of like Network Name of ABCD and Password of 1234. LOL. You certainly did the right thing!

Judy, the network login was not generic at all. The router login was. I misspoke when I posted my changes.
