After a normal shut down last night, today I attempted to start my laptop and it wouldn't recognize my password. I knew I was using the correct one so after many tries I had to call Dell Support. I hate when this happens because I always have difficulty understanding the person I am connected with. Making a long story short, after I gave him control of my laptop he got it working correctly again.
I have decided that I no longer want my laptop password protected since it doesn't leave my home anymore nor does anyone live with me. How do I make the change? I am almost afraid to shut it down again in case this happens again.

Press Win+R keys open the Run dialog box, type netplwizIf prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes then click/tap on OK to open advanced User Accounts. (see attached #1) Uncheck the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer labeled checkbox from the dialog box. Then navigate to the bottom section. Click on the Apply button. You'll see the "Automatically sign in" box after doing so. (see attached #2) Provide your password. You need to type your password in two boxes in order to confirm your changes. Click on the OK button to finish. This should stop the requirement to sign in each time. Attachments:

Wife had this happen on her laptop after a M$ update and a reboot for it. What a fiasco to get it straight.

Before I ever had any problems and had to sign in to have access to my laptop, my picture would appear, my name and the place for me to enter my password. Dell support got me back to this again. I then decided I didn't want to have to sign in anymore and started this thread. Well, I followed all the steps as instructed, viewing the attachments. In attachment #1 unchecked the box and the User name listed was not my name but my email address and Group Administrators; Users So when attachment #2 box came up I entered the same information - my email address and the password I had been using to sign in before my problem. Still have to sign in but now when I start my computer I get what I call a generic face and the message User name or password is incorrect. Try again. and box to check OK When I check OK then at the lower left of the screen appears my picture and name and below that the generic picture and my name. I click on the picture of me and it moves to center screen and the box to enter my password and I can connect again. Crazy!
Out of curiosity and went back to Run and typed in netplwiz and the box as in Attachment #1 comes up with the box unchecked and my email address as User and Group the same as it was. Guess I am still going to have to continue having to sign in, just with another wrinkle. I don't want to have to talk to Dell again if I don't have to.

Check your Settings, Accounts,Sign-in options, choose Never. See if that works.

Did as you said, Judy, and the only never I found was if I have been away from my computer I don't have to sign in again. I selected never on this which is a good thing, but of no help when I restart my computer after having shut down for the night. Thank you for trying to help me.
