I had set Nitro 5 PDF as my default PDF reader and have used it for quite a while. Suddenly, today I found that the default has been changed to WPS Reader, without my knowledge and without doing anything to make the change. I have also, in the past found that some files recorded in LibreOffice Writer and saved in that default had been changed to WPS Writer.
I have installed WPS on my computer but have never set WPS as a default for anything.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I'm uninstalling WPS until I find why it is taking over.

Having a default program changed to a different program is not unusual really. This can happen for any number of reasons, you can accidentally your self, you can open a document sent to you by somebody else who has created the document with WPS and since you have it installed then when you open it WPS will open it. WPS is a program that generally opens files that had been created by the discontinued program, Microsoft Works. It isn't a Microsoft program but a program created by Kingsoft. If you have Libre Office there is no reason to have WPS installed at all. Uninstall it completely and don't reinstall it.
To set All of your Default programs go to Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set your default programs.

It seems that we have little control over what some programs will do.

I was not implying that you didn't know, I am sure you know how to set defaults but there is not one single way to do this, you should use that Control Panel setting AND settings within the programs.
Do we have complete control? No we do not. This is why it is always stressed to watch and read, watch and read when installing and/or using programs. Always check the default settings within a program, change those if necessary. Watch downloads and installs because many, many programs ask the question; "Do you want to set whatever programs this is, as default?" If you don't say no then this WILL be changed. However some times if another program is already set as default this may not be accomplished even though you have said yes. There is no set rule for this, it is up to the user to watch and read. Occasionally any time you use a program then the default will automatically be changed to that particular program.
