This New Zealand Fur Seal was sheltering from the huge seas today on a narrow ledge. It does not appear to be very far from the rocks below but in fact was a good 2 metres. I have no idea how it managed to clamber up to this precarious perch. This was just one of several fur seals we saw that had decided to rest on land today. Click for full size

Perhaps it arrived with higher tide to the ledge? Beautiful coloring to the fur. At first glance the red fur and the various areas of red in/on rocks below gave impression it might have been a physically challenging arrival, but expanding pictures view on iPad showed all red not to be blood but natural coloring in rocks and coloring of the fur. Looks like a beautiful place to take a stroll and gaze out to the sea and nature. Thanks for posting .

Yes, some of our fur seals do have a very brownish tinge. This one kept scratching itself with its flipper and each time we thought it would fall of the ledge.
