Laptop?

I haven't used my laptop for a couple of years. I decided to use it again and it won't accept my password. It gives me a clue to remember it by and I definately am using the correct password. Am I up the creek without a paddle or is there some miracle worker out there that has a suggestion? Sorry for being a klutz.

Try your password with out the space... WindowsSeven or no capitals, but usually passwords are not able to have spaces in them.

Sheila, are you absolutely positive you don't have the caps lock on or perhaps num lock on or off if you use a number in your password?
Do you have your Windows 7 Recovery Disk?

Apart from the lock keys, another long shot but one I have been caught out on more than once when logging into a website. Make sure you are beginning the password right at the start - i.e. not leaving a space before typing the first letter. It happens more often if the password is being copied and pasted but I thought it worth a mention, just in case. There could also be a fault with your keyboard - count the number of characters you have typed in to make sure none are missing. If they do not correspond with the number of letters in your password you could connect an external keyboard and get in from there. How many accounts are there on the laptop - are you certain you are attempting to log into the right one ? Can you log into another account with admin rights so that you can then change the password for the one not working?

I am sorry for not getting back to you sooner, I had unexpected guests from the UK who wanted to do the sight seeing thing. I tried all your suggestions to no avail. Fortunately one close relative worked in the computer field and fixed my problem. I have no idea what he did – it sounded quite nefarious to me. From what I gathered he hacked into my computer as the administrator by using the net command ( whatever that means) I have a new password and things are back to normal, again. Thank you all for giving of your time to help me, I can't tell you how much I apprciate it as I am such a twit with computers and am embarrassed at some of the dumb questions that I ask as you all seem so clever.

No worries. Nothing nefarious by what your relative did. Very normal, legal steps given on lots of help sites and also on MS; Safe Mode with Command Prompt Log in with an administrator account or built-in administrator when you see login screen. Command Prompt runs automatically. Type net user in the Command Prompt and press Enter to see how many user accounts in locked laptop. Then all of laptop users will be listed in the Command Prompt. Choose one administrator to reset forgotten password for laptop. Type net user and your your locked Windows user name plus the new password you want to use. For example your user name might be sheila and your password is xyz. So you would Type net user sheila xyz and hit Enter and now the user sheila would have a newly reset password. Shut down, reboot to normal mode and sign in with your sheila user name and new password.
