What is the effect of doing this? Will something not work? Will others receiving data from one's computer (people you send to) still recognize that what you send is safe?

What is the effect of doing this? Will something not work? Will others receiving data from one's computer (people you send to) still recognize that what you send is safe? What is the affect of doing this? You will be protected against the WannaCry and Petya ransomware both of which are spread using flaws in the SMBv1 protocol . This is a very ancient protocol and if you read the article you would have seen that it’s It is only still only enabled because there are some older applications that haven’t been updated. The article also gives the link to those applications that still use it and it is unlikely that you are using them but do go back to the article and check out the link that gives those applications. This IS going to be disabled by the Windows 10’s Fall Creators Update that will be released in Sept. Why wait? Even if you are not using Windows 10 but are using Windows 7, 8, 8.1 Microsoft IS recommending that all do it. I had no difficulty disabling it today. Everything still works.

I don't think you have any issues by disabling smbv-1. Just follow the instructions in the link MrBill provided. I did it to laptop I have with me (I'm on vacation) and have not had any problems so far. If you do have a problem just go back and recheck the smbv-1 box you unchecked.

Thank you for the advice MrBill. I first read about this last year but failed to act on it. blogs.technet.microsoft.com/filecab/2016/09/16/stop-using-smb1/Since reading the MUO article I have disabled SMBv1 - with no adverse effects. My second printer (use mainly for scanning) IS on the list of applications that use the protocol for some features, and SMBv2 and SMBv3 are not options (HP DeskJet 2540 (see attachment)) These features I can do without.

Thanks guys. I understood why this is a good idea. My question was what, if any, other effects there might be and you've put my mind at ease. Disabled and appreciated. Joel
