Jean and I met a lovely couple, Sandie and Bob from Houston on a Rhine river cruise 4 years ago. I can only hope that they are OK after the horrendous scenes that I am seeing on TV after the hurricane.
I have emailed Bob but have had no reply so far.

Conditions there are terrible, frightening, dangerous. The rain continues and may do so until at least Thursday. There are thousands in shelters and rescues are continuing. According to what I just heard the city of Houston itself has already had 2000 high water rescues. That isn't a count of people, just the actual rescues having taken place. Most rescues involve many people. They showed an assisted living facility yesterday where the residents, many in wheel chairs, were in water waste deep. They all were rescued safely. One of the largest hospitals in Houston is being evacuated. Hundreds of thousands without power and of course power cannot begin to be restored until the rain ends. The flood water itself is contaminated and dangerous to health. Saw this morning a reporter showing the snakes, alligators, fire ants, craw fish and other "critters" now found in the water in streets, homes, etc. My daughter has a friend from childhood who now lives in the Houston area and she, her husband & dog were on their roof awaiting rescue yesterday. The water came up so fast they could do nothing but grab a ladder and climb up on the roof. Water was over the top of their front door by the time they reached the roof. They were on the roof for several hours before they were rescued. They + the dog are now in a shelter with just the clothes on their backs, everything else was lost.

Just heard that Houston averages 50 inches of rain per year and they have projected that the amount of rain from the storm will likely be 50 inches in less than a week. The news anchor said to picture how much this is, 50 inches is roughly equal to the height of a Volkswagen Beetle.
Barney, you'll have to do your own conversion from inches to ? Wasn't sure what you use in Scotland.

It is horrifying to watch the disaster in Texas on CNN, BC is faring badly too, though we need rain critically. B.C. remains under a state of emergency as more than 100 wildfires continue to burn across the province. This season is now B.C.’s worst fire season in history and it is far from over. Approximately 3,600 British Columbians are still on evacuation order and about 12,000 remain on evacuation alert. I live adjacent to wetlands and the 25 hectare bog is completely dry. In Victoria this is the second longest stretch without rain since records were kept. Climate change is wreaking havoc.

Climate change is wreaking havoc. Sheila You are so right Sheila. How people can doubt it, well I just don't understand. I've seen many stories about the fires in B.C. Those are terrifying also and the damage done is unbelievable.

So glad your friends are safe Barney. The storm continues. It is back out in the Gulf of Mexico at the moment but will move back onto land again tomorrow. It is no longer a hurricane but will continue to cause major damage for days to come as it moves forward. Louisiana is receiving major rain now with 10 inches at least expected and one major concern in New Orleans is that 14 of the pumps put in after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, 12 years ago today, are not working. In Houston the largest shelter, the Convention Center run by the Red Cross has cots for 5000 people but now they have 8000 people. Of course they say that no one will be turned away. Just awful, and unbelievable.

The biggest problem with "Climate control" is that there is little we can do at this stage. All of the worlds governments had to change their thinking on EXACTLY what is causing the climate to change. We know from history, that many of those governments, including our own will not face up to the fact that it is human made climate change. They tend to let the other guy do something about it. So, we will slowly deteriorate. Not much to give our future children....

there has always been issues like this. climate change has always been. Houston Texas in built on a swamp covered by concrete . with very Little room for draining . this is a terrible thing that is taking place one would think this would unite our nation /nations. instead of blaming climate change /global warming. we need to focus on the recovery after the flood. it looks like Louisiana is going to catch it . very sad times for our nation lines waiting to get in to the supermarkets

I just heard an amazing number, Hurricane Harvey dumped One Trillion Gallons of water on Houston and that is roughly the amount of water that flows over Niagara Falls in 15 days!
