This plant/weed recently appeared at our fence. It is in our neighbor's yard so we're not going to do anything to it. But we've never seen anything like this so...is it a weed or a desired plant?   |

Thanks Joel. I use a camera not a phone to take my photos so can't use those apps but I will send the link to another lady I know who does take photos of unknown plants with her phone. I am sure she can use them.
I think it is likely a weed too but it was so unusual and I certainly have never seen it thought I'd take a pic and see if anyone else has seen it.

Could be Japanese Knotweed? Could be, looks a bit like other pictures I found except all of those were large clumps or groups of them, the one we have is just that, one. Has a thick stem about the circumference of my little finger. |

If it is Japanese Knotweed, it is one of the most invasive plants on earth. It is illegal in the UK not to control it and can result in heavy fines. goo.gl/images/2kWzJk |

My husband had already sprayed it with a herbacide. Don't know that we have fines here for having invasive plants in your yard. It really isn't in our yard, it is in the yard behind us. It is just next to the fence in the back which is why we noticed it.

Judy, they look very much like a Redbud tree, maybe "Burgundy Hearts." Also similar to a few fruit trees. You might consider posting your pix at GardenWeb in the Name That Plant! topic. You'll get very good ID's there. Rosie |

You'll get very good ID's there. Rosie Thanks Rosie. I did post at Garden Web and listed everybody's suggestions along with my pictures. Posters there said it was none of those suggested here but posters said that it is likely a purple leaf plum seedling, Prunus cerasifera or something from that family for sure. Viewing various pictures from multiple sites I found via DuckDuckGo search I believe I am going to agree with the people who responded to my post on Name That Plant. As I said earlier my husband has already sprayed it with a herbicide and the neighbor cut it down after that. The plant, whatever it was, cannot be allowed to grow in that location because telephone & gas lines run right below it and plants, other than grass, cannot be allowed to grow over the lines as the roots can damage the lines and also if the lines have to be moved or fixed any plants there would be removed by the utility companies. |
