i have downloaded and installed on several machines the webcam drivers from the original manufactuer... i can never get these to work. i can go to device manger and see its there, and says its working properly, but when i attempt to open it, i always get webcam not found. has anyone ever dealt with this? does anyone know how to fix the problem? i repair and sale laptops as some on here know. alot of people want the webcam to work. if i could get an answer to this it would be very helpful. ive tried things like youcam before which work the webcam on some, but they are black and white.... does someone know of a color universal webcam for download?

If these are the integrated cameras then you'd have to get the driver from the original computer manufacturer and for the original operating system. You also need software too. If these are external cameras then you have to use drivers from that camera manufacturer and be absolutely sure the camera and software are compatible with the computer and the operating system. Much of the time using some sort of "universal" software & drivers will be just a "hit or miss" proposition with no guarantees. It also is very possible that the cameras just no longer work. If that is the case then a new external camera would be the only option.

You're welcome. Most generally, web cam drivers come with the operating system when installed at the factory. You are best bet is to go to the computer mfgr's site, not some "hit or miss" driver. There is always a danger in that. Plus you have to also realize there is software needed to do use the camera. It doesn't work just by itself. You need to test them with something, Skype or something like that. There are also various types of web cams which govern what the camera will do. Some work like a "TV" camera for Skype or programs like that, others truly only take a still picture, and yes, there are some that only take black and white pictures. The newest laptops have cameras that pretty much do any of the above but much older computers and those "lower lever" ones only have very basic cameras. And as noted, like anything else, cameras do break.
