You are not waiting long enough for the post to open and the quote to appear in a box at the top of the reply. Remember, posts here are shown to you in the Preview mode, this is automatic and done by the forum software. You do all of the posting in this preview mode. If something looks odd to you, change it. You also CAN edit your posts if you wish for one hour before they are locked, just like most forums. When you first hit the quote button for just a few seconds you will see a white box with the text in it but that will immediately disappear and the blue screen with the quoted text in a box will appear at the top of the post. Be sure you are below that box before you begin to type.

There is no difference here, it worked exactly the same way at WS. Many, many times people would type inside that quote box, nothing stopped you from doing that, there was no special shading, blocking or anything like that.
The only difference here are the colored pages and the quote lines are lighter, otherwise all is exactly the same. You just have to get used to it. There is no rule that you have to use the quotes at all. If quoting a post confuses you then don't bother to use it. Everybody can read the post you are responding to anyway.

Which Theme are you using ? You may find the Default White easier than the blue background one when quoting in posts. Both themes work exactly the same as has been expained but the Default ( I think) is less confusing in this situation
