On the task bar there is a red X - it says that the audio service is not running - This sounds like a pretty silly question - what is the audio system?

If you want to hear sounds, music, video sound, etc. then it has to be turned on. It should be on by default. Sound may be turned off and if so it can be turned back on by hitting the speaker icon on taskbar and when it opens click the icon to turn it on, see attached. Attachments:

Thank you. The reason that I was reticent to ask was that even though I have this red X my sound is working fine. I really do know what audio is. I am scatterbrained but not quite passed my due date - though there might be some who will argue this point. LOL Thank you again for taking the time to respond.

Not past your due date, I am using that one for sure. Actually a simple reboot might fix things and you need to check services by typing services.msc into the search box. Windows Services should show up at the top of the column. Open it. The list is alphabetical as you can see so scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure it is running. Double click on it to open its properties and be sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic. Close it all up. Sometimes, for "whatever" reason a service that should be running will go off and usually just turning it on should fix it up. If it happens continually then it should be checked out.
