This AM I went to Windows update to see if the Creators Update was available yet. Sure enough it was there so I initiated the update. The process went smoothly and took about 2 hours and 10 minutes from start to completed desktop. Upon completion I was informed that my antivirus license had expired and I had no firewall installed. System seemed like someone had put their foot on the brake. I rebooted the computer and the antivirus program found it's lost license, the firewall returned and the brake was released. So in summary the update went well.

Actually called Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and today was the official release date. No need though to manually update, all users will automatically receive this update in due time. Windows Update: FAQ

I was surprised to see the update available when I went to Windows Update. It was just sitting there, I didn't even have to check for updates. as you said "No need though to manually update, all users will automatically receive this update in due time."
If you want the up date now and it does not show up after checking for updates, you can get it using the Windows Update Assistant or using the Windows Media Creation Tool. The Tool gives you the option of upgrading now or creating a bootable flash drive or DVD with the needed install files which would be useful if a reinstall is ever needed.

I am still unable to install the original Creators Update because, apparently, my CPU is incapable of handling it.
I am becoming a bit concerned that I am going to be missing out on important security updates now and in the future.
It would seem that my only resolution is to buy a new computer.

What version are you running Barney? Where did you read that your CPU is incapable of handling the original Creators Update, released in April? According to Microsoft, the requirements for running the Windows 10 Creators Update are the exact same as the requirements for the standard version of Windows 10. "As long as the device meets the compatibility requirements for Windows 10 there are no additional requirements," Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver Display: 800x600 Did you purchase your computer in 2013 or later? If you did then go through this list, it is VERY long, on the HP site and it shows the computer models that have been tested by them that will run Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Desktops are towards the bottom of the list and I do see HP Pavilion 500 listed. support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05195282

It looks like because my machine was manufactured before 2013, there is no support or drivers for the Creators Update!

What version of Windows 10 do you have? Did the computer come with Windows 10 installed?

My 2012 (Dell) came with Win 7 and has long since been updated to Win 10. This morning I installed the new Version 1709. All in all it took about an hour. Seems to be working just fine.

You're very lucky. Some folks, like BigBarney, don't have that ability because his machine has no support or drivers for the Creators Update.

For computers with these processors specifically Microsoft has extended support to 2023; Microsoft Extends Support
Microsoft confirmed t that it will support PCs with Intel's Clover Trail processor with security updates until 2023. These processors generally came on computers and sold with computers from 2014 to 2016 and running Windows 8 and 8.1. So this won't help folks like BigBarney who purchased his computer before 2013 with Windows 7 installed, upgraded to 8.1 and then on to Windows 10 and now has no support or drivers for the Creators Update..

Thanks Barney. You still have time then before you loose support. Windows 10 v.1607 will have full support Tentatively March 2018. So a few months anyway.

My laptop is updated to 1709 Build 16299.19 which is a little different to bugall's It was waiting to download last night .I don't know how long it took as I left it while I slept and then again after a restart before I went to work this morning. It was ready for another restart when I returned. I was surprised to get it so early. My pc also is now also in the process of upgrading. It is taking a very long time. It started at 7pm and it is now 12.30am. I think it is on the last lap as it is 47% in to "Working On Updates Do not turn off your computer. This will take a while" The understatement of the year !" My connection is comparatively slow but the preparation and the actual installation is slower than I expected. The laptop seems fine - have had a quick look at all the 'exciting' new stuff and am a bit underwhelemed. Tried to connect my iPhone but told the app not available in NZ Store. Then thought would activate Windows Hello - also not available. But all seems to be working ok and nothing amiss that I can see so not complaining. It has a heap new smilies 👍👀✔

Just rechecked the the version MS installed on my computer and the was Winver Version 1709 Build 16299.15. I seen reports of people having issues with the Fall Creators Update do different Build numbers are no surprise. MS released the update on 10/17/17 at 10AM Pacific Time (California), I started the install less than 2 hours after release.

I think the 1709 16299.19 is an updated release version which MS is now installing on new updates. When I do a Windows Update I am told I am running the latest version. I started my original update less than two hours after Microsoft released the update so I am sure I was one of the early birds.

Now I'm really depressed! I've updated both my wife's 7 year old laptop and our fairly new club office computer to the Fall Creators Update with no problems. My own desktop still refuses to update. The only help I have been offered by HP is to phone their helpline for advice. I saw a post on an HP forum which suggested that updating the BIOS might solve the problem. Sounds like a step too far for me!

I would first check to see if an updated BIOS is available. If your computer is 7 years old an updated BIOS may be available however it may not solve your problem. Updating a BIOS is not difficult and most motherboard manufacturers will have detailed instructions on how to do it. But first let's find out if one is available and the date it was issued and what it fixes.

Finally received 1709 Build 16299.19 this afternoon. Whole process took about 90 minutes. Thus far I see no changes or problems. But of course it has only been 2 hours. We'll see.
