Sorry for the confusion.
Because of my limited bandwidth. Very slow right now. Will use his Wi-Fi (unlimited & fast) to do the search for updates and download them.

Thanks for the explanation. That really is unnecessary information about using somebody else's password and that type of thing, has nothing to do with what we are doing here. But thanks. When all the updates are finished, then post back.

In 2 hours puter has done the 'blue screen shutdown' 9 times. I finally got one update downloaded and got the attached message when installing. Not sure what to do. Maybe transfer important files to an eternal HD and then take puter to a repair place? Or something else I can do myself after I save the important stuff? DICK Attachments:

That very clearly shows you are installing the wrong driver. You have chosen the wrong one. Please check the Graphic's card again and please delete that incorrect driver. From what I can find at Nvidia that driver is 2 years old, released July 29, 2015
How did you choose that driver?
Please check again and post the exact full name of the Graphics Card you have on the machine and please also give the currently installed driver version.

Puter has shutdown 7 times since 4:30pm. Seems like it does it mostly when downloading. Device info: Attachments:

As noted, you were attempting to install the wrong driver. Your Nvidia is the GeForce 950M, how did you decide which driver to download? Your listing in the Device Manager shows you have a driver that was new in September.
Can you do anything at all without getting a blue screen? What error do the blue screens show?
Sounds like it might be better for you to take the computer to a repair shop and let them put everything 100% right because at this stage I really am concerned there are major problems or if not then soon will be major problems. You have reached the point where you need a good licensed tech to put everything right.

It appears you have 2 display adapters in your computer. I'm guessing that the Intel is a builtin graphics card on the motherboard. I would uninstall/disable the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver from the computer if it is on motherboard. Is the Nvidia GeForce a card that has been added to the computer? Have you ever taken the case off and actually looked at what video card is installed?

Judy--"Your Nvidia is the GeForce 950M"--the device mgr shows it as 940M so that's what I looked for.
"Can you do anything at all without getting a blue screen?" Sometimes I can be on for hrs but today was terrible.
What error do the blue screens show? "Attempted switch from DPC" & "Kmode exception not handled"
After this mess today I am going to try to find a pro, hopefully someone that is really a pro, not a wannabe.
budgall--Both adapters came with the computer.
"Have you ever taken the case off and actually looked at what video card is installed?" No
Thanks to you both, DICK

Sorry Dick about the "mis-numbering" on the graphic card. I read it correctly and typed it wrong. The error from NVidia says it is not correct.
I Do believe that taking it to a pro is absolutely the BEST choice. The fix might be simple but the road to the fix is extremely bumpy for all of us! Don't let some "wannabe" as you said work in it, go to a shop or the Geek Squad, Best Buy, Staples...all of them have computer techs that do fixing. If your nephew knows somebody reliable by all means ask for his help. You want to be able to enjoy your computer and at this rate there certainly could not have been any enjoyment for you with all this. Get it fixed.

I've been on the net for an hr and no shutdowns. It does seem like it is only with downloads.
Thank you!!!!! DICK

Have you changed your Power Options as I suggested in Post #12 ? Doing so could help with crashing while downloading
you may also try using an alternate browser

I would NOT recommend Geek Squad, Best Buy, Staples or and other chain store technicians. I will bet their fix will be a reformat of the hard drive and reinstall of the operating system. I have never had a positive experience with any of them. I once had show a Geek Squad tech how to test a bad motherboard that I bought from Best Buy. I would take it a Mom/Pop computer shop. The repair will most likely be less expensive and repaired someone with better technical knowledge.

budgall; sorry your experience with those I suggested has not been productive. I personally have used none of them but I do know people who have used all the computer repair services I suggested in three different cities and all had very good results and none of the fixes involved reformat/reload. Dick is visiting his nephew right now and hopefully his nephew will have a good repair service he can recommend. This will allow him to get a repair and allow him to again enjoy his computer after many weeks of frustration.

Just got puter back. I don't have win live mail anymore. Download it or use another one--Thunderbird, Outlook or? Don't like the one on here now--don't know what it is, Hover over it and all it says is 'mail'. Since I don't have Live mail anymore it seems I lost my contacts--unless they are hidden somewhere else. Where? I am emailing the repair person about this.
He said that my Avira had a virus and it seems I remember some info about that in the past. Also some registry problems. Now using Windows Defender--good idea?
I'll think of more questions as I use it tonight!!!
Thanks DICK

I'll think of more questions as I use it tonight!!! Thanks DICK Avira had a virus? I have never seen info about Avira having a virus. I've used Avira for probably 10 years at least and never have heard anything about it having a virus. It is one of the top rated AV programs there is available. Has been for years and the most recent tests released the first of the month by the two best independent testers, AV-Test and AV-Comparitives state the same. You want to use Windows Defender, that is your own choice. Not something I would use but it is your computer and your choice. Did the tech reformat the computer? Unless he did that then Windows Live Mail should be on your computer. Look for Windows Live Essentials, Windows Live mail is part of that. If that isn't on the computer then he must have removed it and you cannot get it back The mail program you are seeing is the Mail program included with Windows 10, it comes with this program so you have had it on your computer all along. Windows Live Mail is no longer supported or available for download from Microsoft. You can find it for download but only from untrusted web sites. I would recommend Thunderbird; www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

Downloading Thunderbird. I'm not sure exactly what he did. My bookmarks were saved, files were saved, etc. Only thing missing is Live Mail and contacts. Windows Live Essentials is not on here.

He may have saved your contacts. You will have to wait until you hear from him. If he didn't save them then there is no way to get them back and you'll have to begin anew. You'll probably find that you had a lot of people listed in your contacts that you hadn't heard from or contacted in years. As long as you have your same email address you will easily be able to hear from people who want to email you and when you get those emails it will be very, very easy to add those people to your contact list.

Glad to hear you had someone look at your computer. It sounds like its working OK now, hopefully it will continue. Like Judy said, I have never heard of Avira ever having a virus before. Windows Defender is a usable anti virus program that is not very highly rated. I would not hesitate reinstalling Avira or if you would prefer not to reinstall it I would consider Avast as a good second choice.
