And finally, Mount Vernon, the home of George and Martha Washington. 21 rooms, three floors though the 3rd floor is no longer open to tours. It's 282 years old, owned and maintained by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association of the Union, a private, non-profit organization. Mount Vernon does not accept grants from federal, state, or local governments, and no tax dollars are expended to support its purposes. It gets its income from retail and dining facilities, ticket sales, and donations from foundations and individuals. There were three rooms under renovation while we were there along with the repair and re-rustication of the exterior of the building, very interesting to watch. Attachments:

Its a fine old building and so good it is being maintained so well Oh it is a lovely place and there is a lot more than just the mansion to see. The whole property is over 500 acres and all of it is maintained. The mansion is just one of the buildings there and all are maintained with the same care as the mansion. There is a working grist mill and a working distillery. You can purchase the flour and whiskey produced there at the gift shop. It also is a working farm, has beautiful flower gardens and of course the tombs of George & Martha Washington. It's open 365 days of the year and opening his home to tours was something Washington himself approved of even when he lived there. He & Martha entertained many people every night. Our tour guide said they averaged 672 over night guests a year!
