My computer mag. ,Computer Active, has a three page article this week extolling the virtues of installing and using this software.
Am I wrong or has software from this company been described as 'snake oil' on this forum?

I would lean toward snake oil. Most of these system care programs make great claims about speeding up your computer but I have never seen any speed increases or any great performance improvements using them.

I had and have no intention of going anywhere near this product. I am just surprised that if this company's reputation is as bad as it would seem, why a well subscribed magazine would promote it.
I will be getting in contact with the mag. to ask.

That's why I take all software reviews by computer mags with a grain of salt. I think some software firms pay for positive reviews.

I emailed the editor of the magazine and here is his reply.
Thanks for your email Brian, and for being such a loyal reader.
I accept that IObit ASC has its critics, but it has worked well on PCs that I've owned over the years. We diligently tested the new version, and found it to perform effectively.
I agree that some problem-fixing programs cause harm, and also that IObit has been guilty of smuggling PUPs on to PCs. But this new version doesn't do so. We'll closely monitor it, though.
Thanks again for your email - it's always a pleasure to hear from readers.
Kind regards

Only thing I can say is, unbelievable. He admits parts of this program can cause harm and IObit has been guilty of bringing PUP's onto computers but this "new version doesn't", so that makes this company trustworthy? Well System Care is not the only program this company sells, there are 10 other programs they sell, what about all of those?
This was a personal, private reply to your question and that is something for sure, they could have ignored you, but have they acknowledged any of this publicly to their readers/customers? Why are they touting this company at all? They were known to have stolen the databases of Malwarebytes' and released them as "their own", they have continually offered programs known to have damaged computers and to have included PUP's in them, one of them discussed in a thread right here on this forum, why are they offering this company's software?
Sorry Barney no way would I trust anything this magazine says or sells.

And to tell the truth it was a bear to get rid of all it's leftover crap. even though this "newer and cleaner??" program may be trustworthy now, that doesn't mean it will stay that way.. Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole....

I was surprised they responded to your email but pleased they took the time to respond. Even more amazing they acknowledged the past problems of IObit. Even with good behavior in the future IObit will have a hard time regaining respect with knowledgeable computer users. As bill65 said it's all about the $$$$.
