Hehe - well my new year roses went unnoticed so here is something a little different that you may like - some sunflowers to warm those of you enduring a cold winter. We went on a sunflower field hunt this afternoon. The locations are rotated each year but we found one quite quickly. These will be harvested for bird seed. Click to enlarge Attachments:

Love the sunflowers. Your roses made me jealous. My husband has grown lovely roses the last 5 or 6 years but we couldn't have either growing here today. As I write this at 9:15 A.M. EST the temperature is -11 F. or -23 C. Because we have a 10mph wind the "real feel" is -26F. or -32C. It is supposed to stay like this through the week. Weatherman says though it will warm up to a "balmy" 31 F. on Sunday.

Oh -23C is something I can not even imagine ! Here is another rose for you. It is in my garden and so is the red flowering tree, I needed to climb up a ladder to get a close up shot of it ! It is Southern Rata (a NZ native) and together with the similar Pohutukwa is regarded as our New Zealand Christmas Tree. It is an unreliable flowerer so we were delighted that it obliged by being in full blossom for Christmas this year. The bees love it and Rata Honey is the best, very pale and less sweet than some with a slight saltiness. Attachments:
