Two types of cormorants, the Otago Shag and the Spotted Shag have taken over his old wharf (now closed to humans) as their nesting headquarters. There are over 350 nests this season. The Otago shags which are quite rare and were only discovered as a separate species last year can only nest on a flat surface unlike the others that can use cliff faces. The surface is also covered in stones that the birds swallow to aid digestion
