The task manager that comes bundled with Windows by default should be enough for most people but others, mainly power users, will definitely prefer something like Anvir Task Manager. This highly detailed task management tool analyzes everything that's currently active on your system and displays it on a tabbed interface: running applications, active processes and services, programs that are scheduled to run upon Windows start, percentage of CPU and RAM in use, and more. I especially liked the two icons the programs puts on the system tray that enable you to control RAM usage and CPU load at a glance. Anvir Task Manager is certainly much more than just a management tool for active processes: it's a complete app that lets you control everything that's going on while you're using the computer, and is free! www.anvir.com/ Screen shot as i am using it.

My Norton AV considers this to be unsafe and refuses to allow me to install it. Norton...Mmmmm The genuine AnVir.exe file is a software component of AnVir Task Manager by AnVir Software. AnVir.exe is an executable file that belongs to AnVir Task Manager, a utility software the lets users monitor system processes and services, as well as Internet connections, CPU usage, disk usage and more. This is not an essential Windows process and can be disabled if known to create problems. AnVir Task Manager is available as a free and a paid version. The free version lets users monitor often hidden components such as drivers, locked files, hidden processes, windows and DLL files, as well as CPU and GPU core temperatures, external USB drives, SSD drive health and more. The program can permanently block unwanted processed from being run. The program can also be used to analyze processes, startup programs and Windows services. AnVir Software is an American software company that develops system utility programs primarily for the Windows platform. The company was founded in 2002. Some malware camouflages itself as AnVir.exe, particularly when located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder,so maybe Norton thinks this?... maybe others on here can throw some light on the subject, but must admit this is the FIRST I am aware of it being flagged as BAD?

It gets a good report on 'Should I Remove It' I have had it installed since 2016 (v 8.1.2) There is a later version. I am told my registration has expired. It appears to be still working. Have to admit I had forgotten I had it. I am surprised at how many programs it labels a security risk (e.g Firefox 28%, Vivaldi Update Notifier 30%) It all seems a little bit involved for me

This program is over 10 years old, it was a Giveaway of the Day back in December 2007. It did not get glorious reviews at that time, 51% thumbs up vs 49% thumbs down. Even though it is a 10 year old link you might want to read some of the comments there: www.giveawayoftheday.com/anvir-task-manager/In looking for information on this company, Anvir, I really could find nothing until I finally found the Contact Us information which leads you to Avangate. Who is Avangate? Very interesting: What is Avangate? Now I don't know if iolo really has anything to do with this product but I could find no information about the Anvir company.

Thanks JH but don`t see how being 10 yrs old is at all relevant when the program has had 24 updates since then, the last one only this month....many many free programs are years old,but are constantly updated ,the initial program when developed in the first place may be old now...but if updated on a regular basis is as good as new in my view anyway. Anyway I like and use it when required,it is up to anyone else who might want to try it or just leave it alone,or try and uninstall if not happy, incidentally I did read many reviews (Not your link)before posting and most were of a positive nature. Updates performed link here: www.anvir.com/task-manager-windows-startup-news.htm

I posted it because that was the only link that had more than two comments on it. I never said it had not ever been updated, obviously I knew there were updates since Everton noted that there was a brand new one in her post. Sorry but I am always concerned when the top search results for a program result in only the download page of the program, but no information or link to the company that produces it, and the 3rd party download pages with reviews are Download.com, Softonic, Softpedia. The only one I might trust would be Major Geeks and there are only two comments there and they are over two years old. I am not saying don't use it, just giving the results of what I found when searching.

Methinks maybe Norton knows what they are talking about!
I don't really see the NEED for it. I will give it a wide berth thank you!

Glad you found a newer link than I could find. Comments are better for sure. I am still leery due to the program saying that Firefox and Vivaldi are security risks and the Norton flagging noted by barney so I did download and I ran the install file through virusscan.jotti.org/virscan.org/www.virustotal.com/all three did find and flag some files. These of course could be false positives, I don't know but today I just don't feel safe installing something that has any possible malware findings in the install file. Please understand, I am NOT saying don't use this program. It has been around a long time, I just make it a practice of doing investigation before installing anything these days.

I believe what it boils down to is at the beginning of this thread by bazcaz "The task manager that comes bundled with Windows by default should be enough for most people but others, mainly power users, will definitely prefer something like Anvir Task Manager."
For myself I don't think I need or even understand the more powerful Task Manager, but understand that many people do.
I have had this program on my pc since May 2016 and Avast has never flagged it as suspicious. I did a full deep scan within the last 48 hours and it returned zero problems. I downloaded the new exe file and scanned it independently with Avast as I had done also with my installed exe file- no issues found with either .Then I ran the new one through the links provided by jholland1964 and there were very few reports from the many scans done - two on separate sites were from Dr Web, an anti virus company based in Moscow. I would have thought maybe the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool that downloads with every Windows Update should have discovered anything suspicious. I have always trusted the opinions of How-To Geek and I think that is where I first saw it recommended years ago when I had my old XP machine, long before the GOTD version I now have. I have decided to keep my original version 8.1.2 just in case I ever need it because I think if it were going to cause any problems it would have done so by now Interestingly my version has the option to scan any suspicious file with virustotal - just the one issue out of 68 scans and that is the Dr Web one.
