I have moved the above from here newworldtech.freeforums.net/thread/349/computer-restarts-windows-updates?page=1&scrollTo=2625 to avoid invading that thread. I must be missing something because I can not recall ever having the option to decline any update since having Windows 10 I use Windows 10 Home Edition and Options 1 and 2 in the link do not work in the Home edition. After setting my Ethernet connection as a metered connection I can find no option to stop drivers from downloading as is suggested in the instructions. I do not see this as a solution even if I could find it, because I do not want the metered connection option as I have more than enough data and don't want other apps not working to capacity. The only solution that I can see would work for Windows 10 Home is Option 3 through Control/ Panel/System where NO can be selected for the question whether “you want to automatically download manufacturers’ apps and custom icons available for your devices.” I do not consider this a solution either as it disables all driver updates. I want to be given the option to choose if one is installed or not. As I mentioned in the other thread I have successfully used wushowhide as a temporary measure. I fail to understand why MS makes it so difficult to organize driver replacements - surely they could be made optional right from the start rather than having to jump through all these hoops, many of which are beyond the capabilities of many users. An advisory could be sent instructing users to go to the manufacturers site or download via WU - we deserve the choice. I saw disaster first hand while helping a friend recently. WU in its infinite wisdom automatically replaced her video driver causing her display to become wide and distorted and impossible to watch. Rolling back to the previous driver was not an option as the new driver had installed with WU Creators Update and the 'old driver' rollback option was not there any more. It had worked without issues up until then. On first seeing her display I believed it would be a simple matter of correcting the resolution but only 2 were available - the no good one and a worse one. Hers is an older machine and I found a way to install a driver that would work by using compatibility mode via a legacy driver installer. Had it been my own machine I would have attempted it but was not prepared to do it on someone elses. The upshot was it went to a qualified tech person who did manage to install an older driver that fixed her display problems. He kindly sent me details of the process he went through which convinced me I was right not to attempt it. He did give a warning that Windows may want to reset it in the future so time will tell. This was a costly exercise as the cost was $100 which given the amount of time he spent on it was very reasonable but would have been totally unnecessary had MS just left things as they were.

I apologize. I have removed the information and the link given in the other thread because I was not aware they would not work with Home Edition. I gave the instructions found in several places.
I personally have never had Any new drivers offered by Windows for my Windows 10 machine since I purchased nearly three years ago so I have not had to contend with that, of course declining an update was very simple in Windows 7 and earlier.
I have had new drivers offered to me by the Dell Support Assistant which I use monthly. I do take them when offered by Dell if I feel they are needed. If I am not having any problem with the particular piece of hardware with the offered driver update then I generally wait until I experience a problem.

The information you gave was relevant for that thread as I think BigBarney has the Pro Edition. My update history is in 3 sections, Feature Updates, Quality Updates and Other Updates which is where any driver updates appear. I have none at present as the couple I had were removed from the list with the last Feature Update. It is a clever move on MS's part to only allow disabling driver updates in the Pro Version. It suggests that those of us who can not afford it or are otherwise happy with the Home Edition also do not have the brains to be able to decide whether or not they want their driver replacements from the manufacturers, or MS generic versions. Although I was nervous of automatic updates in the beginning I now believe it is the best way - apart from drivers ! I am happy enough to roll back to a previous version if one proves to be unsuitable and then use the wushohide tool to prevent it reinstalling but would prefer to not have that rigmarole - I am of the opinion drivers should to be replaced only if they need to be. I check with my HP Update regularly. I have found this registry hack that (hopefully) will prevent drivers from being included in WU. There is a reverse hack as well. www.howtogeek.com/302595/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-automatically-updating-hardware-drivers/I am testing this on my own machine and if it causes no problems I will do it on my friend's one - it may just save her from having to purchase a new laptop. Her original driver was said to be unsuitable for windows 10 (the manufacturers advice) and yet it worked perfectly ok before it was replaced with the generic driver and is working perfectly again now that it is back in place. As long as it stays there all should be well but if it was again replaced by WU I don't think it worth going back to be fixed, given the age of her laptop so hopefully this registry entry will prevent this.

Tell you what, I am constantly surprised at what I find out about Windows 10 and the differences you will find even between machines with the exact same Windows 10 edition. I have to Windows Home Edition but when I look at my update history I have TWO sections....Quality Updates and Other Updates and Other updates contain only updates for the Windows Software Malicious Removal Tool. I have NO Feature Updates category at all. I have Windows 10 Home, Version 1709 and build 16299.192.

Think I have memory problems...No, not computer memory...MY personal memory. I just recalled the reason I do not receive Driver updates via Windows Updates. I turned that off shortly after the release of Windows 10 build 14328 was released in April 2016, just two months after I purchased my Windows 10 laptop. I did this using Winaero Tweaker which I have used for years beginning with my Windows 7 computers. Turn off driver updates in Windows Update in Windows 10 using Winaero Tweaker

I too have noticed little differences between my PC and my laptop. The Winaero Tweaker is very useful. I think I had an earlier version with my XP - had forgotten about it (! ) I have installed it to have a look at. The tweak for disabling driver updates is the same registry hack I manually configured.

Pardon my sublime ignorance - where do I look at Update History? On Windows 10 go to Settings, Update and Security, Windows Update and when that opens click View Installed Update History. You can also get a somewhat more detailed list by clicking on Uninstall an Update. Attachments:

You're welcome Paul. Really something isn't it that there are so many differences we've found between our Windows 10 right here on this thread.
