Just a question; I understand that a person born in the U.S. is an automatic citizen of the U.S. Does this also apply to a child born to a tourist who is temporarily in the U.S, on holiday, who has an unexpected birth or an illegal immigrant who became pregnant in say Mexico? Just interested

Just interested In the US citizenship has nothing to do with Where the mother became pregnant, it is giving birth in the US that gives the infant US citizenship. Birthright citizenship in the United States

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that if the child is born in US they are a US citizen regardless of the parents heritage or status.
Judy just beat to the enter key and gave a better answer

Here is more information concerning the 14th Amendment
Read the entire web page. This amendment is very clear and precise. It has 5 different sections, more than many other amendments and covers much more than Citizenship including monetary claims do to the freeing of slaves by the 13th Amendment, due process, public debt of the US, the number of Congressional representatives for each state has depends on the number of people counted in the census in that state. Fascinating reading.

Thanks for the information Judy and Budgall. I guess those children of illegals and tourists born in the US would have dual citizenship. Wonder about those countries who do not allow Dual citizenship such as Germany. Wonder if Mexican illegal children have dual citizenship.

Wonder about those countries who do not allow Dual citizenship such as Germany. Wonder if Mexican illegal children have dual citizenship. Children of Mexican illegals born in the US are absolutely allowed to have dual citizenship. The are automatically US Citizens at birth here in the US and if they wish to have a dual citizenship US/Mexican the process for dual citizenship is actually much simpler to complete in Mexico. That is these children's Legal Right since they were born in the United States to parents with Mexican citizenship. Mexico began offering dual nationality in 1998, it was in part to encourage its emigrants to retain their American citizenship. The Mexican government also hoped it would encourage its emigrants in the U.S. to advocate for Mexico on all fronts. The process for obtaining dual citizenship

People all over the world come here with a visa...once the visa runs out if they have not given birth they just stay no one knows where they are and when they give birth their baby is a citizen...then the other family members get to come here...including cousins..

Though this thread began as just a general question thread it now runs the risk of becoming a political discussion which is not allowed at Newworldtech.
Therefore this thread is now locked.
If you desire to have a political discussion then it is suggested that you go to a forum that is aimed at that purpose or go to a forum that has an RP&C section similar to the one at WS.
