You say you couldn't find Settings? Go to the search box and type Settings Judy, I tried typing 'Settings' into my Search box and got the same result as the OP. My way of accessing Windows Settings is to click on the 'Start' button and then click on 'PC Settings' See attachment The way that You access Settings, Start, PC Settings is exactly the same way I normally access Settings. But since the OP seemed somewhat confused on some things ( i.e. the EDT Control Panel) I suggested typing Settings into the Search box because I can access Windows Settings that way also. The easiest way to access settings is from the notification area far Lower right . Click on the icon and there is a tile named “All Settings” when you get there you can click on ‘Devices’ and follow the excellent instructions in post 23 if you want to turn off the touchpad.
I believe the way via start menu is with classic shell operating. I don’t have classic shell and so do not see PC settings.
Typing mouse in the search box will bring up Mouse Settings.

Post 25. You have misunderstood. The advice is to UN check.. give it a try. Also take the check mark out of ‘enhance pointer precision’ if it is already checked. It is only by trying suggestions you may find a solution They can easily be reversed if they need to be.

How do you have the pad covered? I have never seen anyone with the pad covered. Mine actually clicks even if it is turned off, the cursor doesn't move of course. A very small amount of pressure or movement is all that is needed. I use cardboard over the pad You have never explained Why do you do this? I have never heard of anybody doing that and don't know any good reason to do this. As far as I know nobody else here has ever heard of anyone doing that either.

My wife has placed a wireless keyboard over her touchpad on her MacBookPro (laptop). Formerly she kept inadvertantly catching the heel of her hand on the touchhpad when she was typing. Problem solved.

I just got a new HPlaptop and used this to disable the touchpad... had to dink around with it a bid to figure out how to use it but I did get it disabled.

It is not so strange to cover the touchpad--a computer guy I know also does it.....because....I do drag my sleeve over it at times or inadvertently bump it. I have it set at 'least sensitive' but it still messes me up. I much prefer a mouse--until it started skittering.

You are correct about my misunderstanding Most here are computer savvy--I am not..my brain does not work that way. I do try everything that people here are telling me..to the best of my understanding. It also appears that my programs do not show the same as some of those who are trying to help, so I just have to muster through.

You actually open them and see them better two ways, either double click on the attachment and it will open in the window you are viewing Or with some browsers you can Right Click and choose Open in New Tab. If you do this then the attachment will nearly fill the entire screen. It will measure approximately 12 inches x 8 inches if you wanted to print it.

If the touchpad is disabled or turned off, as all of them can be, then a cover is not needed. I too prefer a mouse and have had three laptops. First thing I did on all of them is plug in my mouse and next thing was turn off the touchpad. What is the exact make and model of your laptop?

Absolutely Nothing wrong with it. I did not post to you, I was posting to pedirn63, not to you. She is not trying to view the attachment correctly. She is zooming the picture rather than opening the attachment. You don't have to do anything.

You did not respond to my question in post #7 - when does the problem happen - is it when you are typing ? Try this - go back to your Mouse Properties (Settings/Devices/Mouse and then click on 'Additional Mouse Options' under Related settings on the right) Click Pointer Options Tab Make sure the "Hide Pointer While Typing" check box is UNchecked. Click "Apply" Click "OK" I did not do this because I do not want to hide the pointer at this time. The 'skittering' happens when I try to point at something on a page--so need to see it. OK now--I did this procedure an hour ago--and have had NO pointer jumping so far !!! I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the final solution......thank you so much.

Many thank yous for all the help this involved. Once my pea brain understood what Everton was telling me to do, I did it an hour ago--and the mouse/pointer has settled down. Hopefully, this solved the problem for good.

Hopefully, this solved the problem for good. That is good news your mouse has finally stopped skittering You may now want to disable your touchpad and dispense with the cardboard. My laptop is also an Acer Aspire (5750) with which I prefer using a mouse. I can toggle the touchpad on and off with the fn+f7 keypad combination. The touchpad can also be disabled. Go back to Settings/Devices then select Touchpad from the list. Select Additional Settings from under Related settings on the right and what is on my first attachment will appear. Click the Elan Tab and then Stop the device as in second attachment. Click Apply then OK (Click attachments to enlarge) I understand that this method can sometimes revert back to being Enabled on a restart with some machines (it stays stopped on mine) The Key combination is the most reliable and can easily be reversed if someone needs to use the touchpad

This has been an interesting thread to follow. Glad to see that it would appear to have been sorted out. Just a point of interest. Much to my amusement, the term 'skitters' is used in this part of the world to describe the result of a stomach upset

Much to my amusement, the term 'skitters' is used in this part of the world to describe the result of a stomach upset I quite like the way the British speak--BBC programs are unbeatable and I learn a lot of new phrases when I watch them. When the mouse pointer was 'skittering', it did tend to make one's stomach a bit upset

This is an interesting thread. I use my laptop almost exclusively with a large monitor, external keyboard and wireless mouse. The laptop itself is set to the side. I must have a look to see if the touchpad is turned on.
