I have paid subscriptions to several news websites. Among other things, paid subscriptions give you the right to comment on some stories. However on three sites the comments function does not work unless third party cookies are allowed. I have complained bitterly to the organisations concerned, but they're not going to do anything about it. My current workaround (which is a pain in the neck) is to use an alternate browser for those (and only those) websites, and Cclean it often.
The only print newspaper here is owned by Murdoch, so maximum access to balanced reporting is vital.

Understand your complaint Paul both about need to get a balanced news access when Murdoch is your only print option and block 3rd party cookies. I think your workaround is very clever really. I am sure it is a pain but a good workaround nonetheless and really gives you good control over the 3rd party cookies too. The use of 3rd party cookies, from outside advertisers, is very likely the main way they can pay their bills because, generally, online subscription charges by newspapers especially do not pay their bills. I subscribe to two online services from two print newspapers and I know for sure that my $3 a month doesn't do much as far as supporting the papers and keeping them in print. Newspapers today have so much competition that companies and ad agencies do not really try to place ads in them because print ad coverage is not as wide as TV, computers, tablets, phone, social media, etc. When companies allow comments they of courses have to pay for additional web space usage too so this is another reason for the need for the ads which use 3rd party cookies.
