I'm having a problem installing a windows update.
In my notifications I get a message "We couldn't finish installing an update" When I click on the notice it says to go to updates. In my updates it says KB4088776 requires a restart to finish installing updates. I go to power and choose Update and Restart. After the computer restarts I get the same notification "We couldn't finish installing updates" and the same sequence starts again. It began with the update on 3-18-2018.
Anyone know what I should do at this point to finish the installation of this update?
Thanks in advance for the help, Mary

I went through the same procedure several ties without success.
Then I checked for updates. It said that I need to restart to complete update, and when I clicked on restart from the Check for Updates point the computer restarted and it appears that the update was successfully completed. Just wanted to add this in case anyone else was having this problem.

One piece of advice I was given many years ago was that it is always recommended that you restart the computer after receiving Windows updates, even if you are not told to do so. This will never hurt the computer and most often help everything work as it should. Thank you so much!

Well I thought I had it working, but I still am going through the same circle, with no success. Once again.
Windows 10 version 1709 for x64 based system KB4088776 requires restart. When I restarted I got the following message:
"We couldn't finish installing updates."
I Ran the troubleshooter: Problem found: Update Data Base Error Detected. Not Fixed
What should I do at this point?
Thanks in advance, Mary

This is causing a problem for some people and Microsoft IS aware of it and their recommendation is to do that Uninstall and then to try again to install KB4088776. Do NOT reinstall that one KB4056892.

Judy- I uninstalled KB 4056892, but I'm still stuck in the same cycle. I checked on the control panel and KB4056892 is not showing in installed updates anymore, but when I check for updates it still says KB4088776 needs to restart, and when I restart the only setting option is update and restart or update and shut down.

Have you tried update and shut down? I've never had that option but it is worth a try. That means shut down, don't let it restart automatically. Then boot up just like you would normally do and keep your fingers crossed.

Judy-
Tried update and shutdown with the same result. This is so frustrating!
I'm going to shut it down for tonight. Maybe I'll have better luck tomorrow.
Thanks for your help,
Mary

What processor (CPU) is in your computer? I had to do the shutdown and restart when I installed KB4088776 be fore it would take. However I did not use Windows update to install it. I download the update and did a manual install because I have Windows updates turned off because KB4056892 locks my computer on reboot. My problem computer has an AMD processor.

As the Troubleshooter gave the result "Problem found: Update Data Base Error Detected. Not Fixed" then running System File Checker should replace the damaged file.
You need a Command Prompt with admin privileges and then type in sfc /scannow
A restart is needed once the scan is complete

Budgal-
I ran a Belarc advisor to be sure as to what CPU on my computer 2.50 gigahertz Intel core i7-3537u
Everton-
I ran the sfc/scannow as administrator it said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations" I restarted the computer and still have the same results. "We couldn't finish installing update" Update and restart and Update and shut down are still only power options,

Rather than using Windows updates you might try a manual install of the update as noted by budgall That standalone file can be downloaded from this link KB4088776

Judy- I tried the manual stand alone download, it said kb408876 was already installed. It's still the same problem with the restart to complete the installation. Should I uninstall kb408876 through the control panel and then try to install it from the stand alone download?

Judy- I tried your link for kb4088776, but it just went back to this page. I tried the Microsoft catalog at www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4088776I'm not sure which download to use. I tried the 703.8 MB but after installing it, when I checked for windows updates on my computer, it tried to download kb4088776 with the same cycle of futility. Should I have downloaded the standalone 698.3MG from the Microsoft Update catalog?

Should I have downloaded the standalone 698.3MG from the Microsoft Update catalog? First of all, Does KB408876 show as installed? Can you reboot without getting the prompt to reboot to complete the install? If you did install the correct file, the 703.8 MB then why did you check for Updates? Windows 10 does that automatically you don't need to nor should keep checking for updates. If your settings are correct then this is done automatically once a day. The 698.3MG is NOT the correct file so no do not install it. Sorry about the bad link, I have no clue what I did. Here is the correct one. download.windowsupdate.com/d/msdownload/update/software/secu/2018/03/windows10.0-kb4088776-x64_55756340f1e2c2090f94de6d256eafd75e1cee9c.msu

Judy-
I went into the control panel to see if kb 4088776 showed in installed updates. It shows Kb 4088776, but it doesn't show the installed date like the others do.
No, I can't reboot without the prompt to complete the install.
I checked for updates, because I thought that would show that there were no more updates. I guess I didn't think about windows doing that automatically.
I uninstalled the kb4088776 in the control panel and then installed it from your link. The control panel still shows it under windows updates, but it still doesn't have the date installed like the other updates have, and I still can't restart the computer without the prompt to update.

Let me see if I understand your issue. The installation of KB4088776 installs but requires a reboot to finalize. During this finalization process you bluescreen and the computer locks up forcing you to restart the computer. On restart does the computer rollback the update to the period prior to the attempted update. If that's whats happening,I would forget installing KB4088776, set your computer updates to not update future updates (WIndows update will stop updating for I think 30 days). When Windows releases the next update, download it and do a manual install. This update will install even with Windows update turned off.
I have Windows update turned off on one of my computers because KB4056892 will not install but using the above manual update method I have added the last two updates. My Windows version shows the current version and build number. Someday soon when I have some time to play, I will turn Windows update back on. The nice thing about turning Windows update on and off is that it resets the Windows update delay time.

budgall, she's not said she gets a blue screen or a freeze either. In her first post she said;
So it is her notifications where she gets the message, not in a freeze or a blue screen.
Mary, Are you using the prompt to Restart or are you using your Start/Shutdown option and then rebooting yourself? Restart actually does shut everything down and automatically restarts. Start/Shutdown does not turn everything off unless you have Fast Start disabled. Fast startup is sort of like shutdown light -- when fast startup is enabled, Windows will save some of your computer's system files to a hibernation file when you shutdown and then since they aren't turned completely off when you hit the power button to turn it back on these files boot quicker. If you hit Restart this does not happen, all files close down and have to restart.
When I received KB4088776 on March 14 I also received an Adobe Flash update and KB4090914. Did you receive both of those?

Judy-
I've used the start/update and restart and also used the start/update and shut down and rebooted myself, with the same results. Whe I looked at the window updates installed in my control panel the Adobe update was there, but it didn't have the date installed either. I assumed that it was part of the kb4088776 update that still needs a restart to complete the installation.

I never check Windows Updates but only when I get an update waiting or available notification, which appears in the lower right corner of the taskbar next to the date & time, I go to PC Settings, Updates and Security. It shows the updates available waiting for install and I choose install. They install and then I get the message right then that a Restart is required to finish. I hit that Restart button and let the process finish. You can also check your installed updates via PC Setting, Updates and Security. There is an option to see installed updates. Check there and see what you have.

Judy-
Sorry if I wasn't clear in my explanation. I mean that I click on the windows key then click on the power and my only options are update and restart or update and shut down.
I also got a message popped up saying "We have an update for you which will automatically restart at 6:05pm" When it restarted I got the message in the notifications symbol on the lower right side that said we couldn't finish installing updates . Select this message to learn more." when I selected the message it showed Last failed attempt kb4088776 with the following 0x80070bc2 and that the update requires a restart. I took a screen shot , but I don't know how to add it to this post.

@judy - The Start/Update verbiage appears on the restart button when a restart is required. I forget exactly where or when as I blindly always do a shutdown and restart after all windows updates. gaelic123 - If the only problem you are having is the restart message, I would consider my suggestion above. Perhaps the next update will solve this problem. I just looked at Windows update history and discovered that KB4090913 still reports it needs a restart to complete. I have no idea how many times my system has rebooted since that was installed.

Good Find Judy, I just downloaded it and will run it on my Win 10 problem computer later today or tomorrow afternoon. Will let you know if blocks my problem update which does bluescreen and lock my computer. So glad I only updated to Windows 10 on one computer. Long live Windows 7.
