Judy- I'll try that tomorrow. I've had enough frustration for today. Once again, I thank you for all your help, Mary One more thing, what build is your Windows 10? This update is for OS Build 16299.309. To find out do this: Go to Start and in the Search box type this winver.
When that appears click on it and you will be shown a box with the information, mine says Windows 10 Microsoft Windows Version 1709 OS Build 16299.309

Judy-
The problem started when windows update automatically downloaded it. Why did it download it automatically if it's not appropriate for this version? I've gotten another message "we've got an update for you..." The message had an option to do it later, which I opted for.Should I still attempt your suggestion to avoid the update tomorrow ?

This was just a suggestion because I have found no other options. Are you certain this update you have just been offered is the same one? If it is then if it were me I wouldn't take it.

Judy, my understanding is that March 13th KB4088776 updates Version 1709 to OS Build 16299.309. OS Build 16299.248 was the update received with KB4074588 on February 13th. Am I understanding this incorrectly?

Mary - you said you used the troubleshooter - did you follow this link or use the built-in automatic troubleshooter ? The link has 5 separate procedures to follow.. however, it appears that the problem you are having is widespread and in your situation I would tend to wait until MS issues a new KB to fix the problem.

To go along with what Everton suggested, I have searched through various other forums and have found numerous threads with identical problems that you are having Mary. Some of the posts could have been written by you as they are nearly word for word. I don't mean you did this I just mean many others are having identical problems. They have had the same problems with the automatic download/install and same problems using the standalone files. So don't worry about it and continue to block it. MS will get if fixed as they do know there is a problem.

Judy-
I used your suggestion in Reply#27 to hide the update. The first time I tried it, I uninstalled kb4088776, but Windows continued to automatically download the update, with the same result. Then I realized that I hadn't also hidden the adobe update (Which I believe was part of kb4088776) so I uninstalled both kb4088776 and uninstalled the adobe update. I then hid both and restarted the computer. So far it hasn't downloaded it again.(Knock on wood).
Hopefully Microsoft will fix this in the near future, since so many of us seem to have the same problem with this update.
In reference to your reply#30. I'm just guessing, but do you think the reason I don't have the same version as you do may be because kb4088776 could be installing version 16299.309 ?
Thanks for all your help,
Mary

Good Find Judy, I just downloaded it and will run it on my Win 10 problem computer later today or tomorrow afternoon. Will let you know if blocks my problem update which does bluescreen and lock my computer. So glad I only updated to Windows 10 on one computer. Long live Windows 7. Followup: Today I re-enabled automatic updates in order to test if the prevent-a-windows-update link Judy provided would work. Prior to installing the downloaded link I had the computer check for updates. A couple minor ones were found, downloaded and installed. KB4056892 (which has failed to install 7 times) was not found when I checked for updates. In summary, it appears my action to turn off automatic updates and do manual installs of new updates solved whatever issues KB4056892 was having. I have left automatic updates turned on and await for the next update from Microsoft to see if my update problem is solved. I did not install the download in the link Judy provided so I can not if it works or not.

Thanks for all your help, Mary The Adobe Flash update is NOT part of KB4088776. It comes from Adobe. They just give the Adobe updates because it is very risky to use Flash without it being fully up to date. Most browsers today hobble Flash by keeping it turned off unless really needed because of its risks. It is being phased out by 2020. If you don't use anything that requires Flash then you don't even need it or the updates. Yes, as Everton noted, it is likely that installing KB4088776 will give you the OS version 16299.309.

HI All Just a helpful hint. I go to www.GroovyPost.com It is a great site when there is a update they give step by step how to do it and how to tell you if it was done completely . They have so many helpful tips daily . Duckie It is a very useful site but gives no help with the install problems with this specific update. KB4088776 has proved problematical for many users. It installed without a hitch on both my machines. Those not so fortunate are being advised to wait for a solution from Microsoft. You may like to place the link to GroovyPost in the Tips & Tricks section where it will be see by more members
