Can anybody recommend an alternative to Facebook? Due to the lack of security and data sharing, a friend of mine who I only recently got back in touch with after 50 years, has had to delete his Facebook account. He is a retired teacher and was being verbally attacked by former pupils and their cohorts. The attacks then spread to his family including his grand children. We are very keen to stay in touch and share memories of our childhood but just not via Facebook.

No Specific personal recommended alternative to Facebook but some suggestions from a "never used Facebook" person. Besides the obvious of regular email or telephone/cellphone for contacting each other, there are an assortment of alternatives listed in the very recent C/net article .... Social Media Alternatives to Facebook , including Twitter and Path and others...... Additionally for group messaging there is " Yahoo Groups" available in Yahoo Mail, or the Professional/Retiree website of LinkedIn .. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LinkedIn or their website of www.linkedin.com As just a few suggestions, or go through the hundreds of security settings in Facebook to enhance user privacy on the Internet (those seem to change almost daily and certainly with each update of Facebook)...... Or go to Rick Rouse's website for an abundance of tips on a daily basis for enhancing your secure use of Facebook ( www.ricksdailytips.com )... if you have enough free time to be changing your Facebook settings on a nearly daily routine...... Just remember that any alternative to just email, texting or letter writing or phone calls will involve a business and businesses only stay in business if they make a profit, and in Social Media their profit doesn't give a lot of consideration to your privacy or security in many instances.....

But this site may help. Please use with caution, because I have not used it myself.

Why not just email each other .? Any online communication has its risks unfortunately. You friend must have had very poorly configured Facebook security settings to receive such abuse. Properly configured attackers should not have been able to see his posts, let alone comment. I have gained much enjoyment and reconnected with some old friends over the past 8 years using Facebook with no problems. However I do have some friends who for various reasons choose not to use Facebook and with them we communicate via email and one of them through old fashioned snail mail. There is always the chance the postman could open our snail mail letters much easier than he could hack a Facebook account though. www.facebook.com/about/basics/stay-safe-and-secure

i use facebook have been for years never had a problem what soever Key is never make your account Public. Keep it Private, limit those who can see anything only to those you want to be able to see things and only to those you give permission to see and post. Block anyone you do not want to see your account or post to your account. Set everything so that it is available only to Friends. Friends are those that you personally have chosen. Unless somebody is on your Friends list then nothing can be seen nor posted by that person.

mine stays public no problems Except: Mark Zuckerberg knows all about you. (And I mean ALL!) Cambridge Analytica know all about you. Your data was used to influence the result of the US election.
