Got a laptop from a friend today. She wants me to get the pictures off for her.. The hard drive is fine but has video issues. The only way you can see the pictures on the desktop...thats where they are.....but it wont stay on long enough to try and do anything. The screen flickers off and on bad.....so what im trying to do is this....i removed the hard drive from her laptop....connected to my laptop via a usb to sata cable.. Ive looked in several places and nowhere can i find them.....does anyone have an idea where they would be? They were on the desktop.....but they dont show in the desktop folder or users. So where could they be?

Have you tried plugging the laptop to an external monitor? Have you tried searching for the files by the extension (ie. *.jpg for file in jpg format). How did she save the files to the desktop? what was the source of the files when she saved them?

I tried every way you said except connect it to a monitor...i had thought of that but decided that would do no good as that laptop has no cd/dvd drive.....i hate they started making them without one. Major flawed decision. Who doesnt need to burn files sooner or later? I have an external burner but its at a friends house.

I still use CDs. My car has none of the fancy USB ports, I don't have a fancy smart tv, etc. Don't be mean.

Sirfederico wants to take files OFF a computer, presumably to transfer them to another one. We are simply pointing out to him a means of achieving that end which he appears to have overlooked. We are not being mean, we are being helpful.

To be fair - I understood Rachel's remark 'don't be mean' to be tongue in cheek. It made me smile anyway - being one of us that can remember dial up and whose old car does not even have the luxury of a cd player let alone a USB port. I don't have a smart TV either and vividly remember phones that did not even have a dial - just lived on the wall with a crank handle to alert the operator to connect you to your number which was on a party line - so your conversations could be listened to by anyone at the exchange and those on the same line if they were quiet enough ! No need for complicated hacking - privacy had is own issues back then as well as now. Sirfredrico could not find the desktop files - then he found most of them but no one knows where or how or what happened to them then - maybe he copied them to a USB flash drive ! I am off to wind up my phonograph now

Haha.... :-D . to all responses....ive used mainly search under the drive to locate them....as to saving to a flash drive.....that wasnt possible...as shes a proffesional photographer and also has family pictures she wanted saved....in all she had around 600 gb. Of pictures if not more....i have about 5 dvds burnt so far....but im trying to talk her into getting an external drive....that way i can move them to it and it would be more convienent for her in trying to find what shes looking for, as they would all be together one after the other and not spread out over numerous dvds shed have to check.....

Does she understand how many DVD's she's going to need to store 600 GB worth of pictures? Standard one sided DVD's only have a storage capacity of about 4.7 GB. You are talking about well over 130 DVD's depending on the size of the pictures and that is if every single burn goes without problems. External HD is truly the easiest way to transfer these pictures, all you have to do is move them. Burning them will take days and again that is if there are no problems with the burn. DVD's should only be considered temporary too. Also no guarantee they can be played on all computers or players either, not uncommon to find that they cannot be played at a later date. A good New 1 Tb external hard drive is the way to go for sure and likely would cost less than the number of needed DVD's. You can get good ones for under $60. I am surprised, her being a professional photographer, that she would even take the chance of storing her work on a computer. She could easily lose her entire business that way. Right now this shows it is a very likely possibility. If you had not been able to find a way to access them then she would be out of business now and possibly owing clients money for the pictures they paid for but would not ever receive.

Yes i explained all that to her. She said her husband is going to get an external drive monday....did i read correctly? You can get a 1tb for under $60? If so i need to tell her before she buys a used one as thats what theyre planning on from unclaimed baggage....didnt realize they were that cheap...but of course ive never checked into it.

If so i need to tell her before she buys a used one as thats what theyre planning on from unclaimed baggage....didnt realize they were that cheap...but of course ive never checked into it. A used drive? So she purchases a used hard drive from an unknown source and of course there is no warranty for this used drive. It is unknown how "used" it may could be six days old or six years old but definitely not new and may have been used and wiped hundreds of times, no way to know. Before she can use it the drive will need to be reformatted so there is nothing left on it from the previous owner and to be sure she definitely does have enough storage space. After all of that all of her valuable business files must be moved but is there a guarantee that this drive will truly keep her files safe? No because it is a used drive. My sincerest apologies but I find this all extremely unbelievable. A professional photograph storing her entire business on a computer, nearly losing it all, and then opting to purchase a used hard drive to move the entire business for storage? I honestly am sorry but this is shocking to me really. Yes, you can purchase a 1 TB hard drive for $60 or less at; Wal-MartOffice DepotTargetNeweggThose are just four of the numerous listings on just the first page of a search for 1 TB External Hard Drive. If she really is serious about keeping her business then she should consider a bigger external HD. If she purchases a 1 TB drive that will be more than one-half filled once all of her current photos are moved to it. 1TB = 1000GB. A brand new 2 TB hard drive at all of these places can be purchased for under $100, most have them for around $75. A very small price to pay to keep literally thousands of dollars worth of photos safe and secure.

This lady must have an enormous number of (apparently not backed up) photos. 600GB !! I have well over 30,000 photos on my hard drive and I just checked with the Disk Analyser in CCleaner and they use 301,654.80MB of my 1TB hard drive.
If I were a professional photographer I would have AT THE VERY LEAST two external drives for back-ups. External drives can fail as well. Most of us know that from experience.
I back up to three separate drives.

A professional photographer (like my son-in-law) would keep them in tiff, raw or bmp, each of which are several orders of size larger than jpg/png, but contain far more fine detail usually not immediately apparent to the human eye but important for digital retouching. The pictures are probably physically larger too. I have 47,000 picture files (some off camera, many collected from the web) occupying approximately 23,000Mb. Downloaded photos tend to be much smaller than off-camera. The important stuff (the family album) is backed up (using syncback) to two laptops and two separate external drives.

If this lady is truly a professional photographer, and to be honest I have my doubts, she may want to be but just because she takes lots of photos doesn't make her a pro. A pro works for payment for their photos and if those photos are lost then so is the business AND reputation because she has taken money but cannot produce the photos that the client paid for. She is not saving them like a pro should do. She should be following the steps given by Paul D that his son-in-law uses. This lady is not doing this and electing to save all of her photos on one laptop with no way to access or move them and then to buy a used hard drive to use to save her business is just mind boggling to me.

Ok. All has been covered about the pictures..... But now im looking for opinions..... This laptop i took the pictures from because you couldnt see the screen most of the time is a dell 15 7547 p41f... A computer guy today offered me $100. For it.....that being said.....it has a 1tb. Drive and 8 gb. RAM. Processor is an intel i5.....my question is.....would it be a good idea to sell it for $100 or keep it to get it repaired or either use it connected to my tv to watch movies or whatever? What do you think folks? $100 is not a whopping amount....we all know how fast money goes.....i could never find another laptop that worked this good minus the video....i did do some research and found these laptops are bad about the video going out. On the other hand i burn alot of music. And this laptop has no cd drive. Help me make up my mind. Lol
Edit....did i mention she gave me this laptop to get the pictures off for her?

Sorry but much of this really doesn't make sense. If you cannot see anything on the computer screen then how can you say that you've "never found another laptop that worked this good"? How do you know how it is working if you can't see anything? And, if it works as well as you say it does then why would you only use it to connect to a TV to watch movies, where would you get these movies & why not use it as a computer? And why would you sell this computer that you say has worked better than any laptop you have used for just $100 when you say it can be hooked up to a TV, why not hook it up to a monitor? All rather confusing really.

You should sell it for the $100 and use the money to replace the used drive you have that is going bad with a new one

Questions; where did you find info stating these laptops are bad about video going out? I searched all morning and found no references to this anywhere. I stopped looking at page # 5 of my searches. How do you know it is the monitor and not the video card causing the problem? It may only need updated video drivers but you won't know unless you hook it to another monitor or your TV to know for sure. Why would you need a CD drive because you said you have an external burner? Just wondering.

Why would you need a CD drive because you said you have an external burner? Just wondering. If you have trouble understanding everything i have clearly stated i cant help because youre confused. Ii know its better because when you connect it to hdmi you can kind of tell that when you attempt to use it. Ive used it to transfer some of those pics from my external to it and it went quite a bit faster than the other laptop i was using. And o read that somewhere on searching the peoblem. I didnt write it down or attempt to make a mental note of it. I read it and thats all. Do you save every link where you read something? My memory isnt that good....i cant tell you where i read it just that i did.....this shouldnt be an issue....why cant you take what i say as truth and at face value rather than doubting everything i say......as ive said before....and as you also said in this thread....i honestly doubt she is a proffesional photographer.....i told you she was....and yet you "doubt" it.....just like all the other things you "doubt" that i say...and why do i have to explain every little detail like why do i know its better?....better other than the video issue....if you cant remember where in this thread you doubt shes a proffesional photographer....look it up in your past threads. Im not wasting my time doing it! Also....if youre wondering why i transferred those files to this computer....its because i sold my other one.....im having rough times here and i have to cut corners and plan my next move ahead of time because im a month behind on my rent. Thats why i sold it. If you cannot see anything on the computer screen then how can you say that you've "never found another laptop that worked this good"? How do you know how it is working if you can't see anything? Because other that. That it works better....i can see it if i connect it to my tv. Thats how i know its working. I feel like youre throwing things out here just trying to get under my skin judy. What person wouldnt know if it was working if they connected it to a monitor or a tv?

You stated as fact that this model of computer has video issues but did not back it up and that is why I asked because I could not find that information. People come here for information but if a person posts information that truly cannot be verified then that is doing a disservice to those who are reading and gives the site a bad reputation.
You never said anywhere earlier that you had hooked this computer up to an HDMI cable but now you say that you did. HDMI is used for video but how are we supposed to know where the other end of the HDMI cable was attached...a TV, a monitor? You said earlier that you did NOT attach it to another monitor.
Hence confusion and I am going to bet I am not the only reader confused by this lack of information.
EDIT:
I see the info below was added to your post after I replied above in reply #25.
I am asking questions not to get under your skin, I asked because you didn't originally give the information so it didn't make sense. No other reason.
