Just realised today that I had never run Adwcleaner on my wife's laptop. 20 naughty boys on there! Cleaned ok. I have attached the log before cleaning. AdwCleanerS00.txt (2.53 KB)

Be sure to also run Malwarebytes' and SUPERAntispyware. I notice that a couple of the items found were Adware. Elex. Those are known to be of Chinese orgin, usually come onto the computer with a downloaded file, program or video. Several listings for SuperEasy Software, some what questionable software. Doesn't appear to have its own web site but lots of its programs are hosted at Softonic, known to bundle unwanteds with their downloads. A large number of SuperEasy Software offerings are of the "free to try but in the end you must buy" variety. I don't know much about them but I do know that AdwCleaner is not the only removal program that flags and removes them. Does your wife use Kies to transfer multimedia content to or from her Samsung smartphone or play multimedia that is stored on her Samsung smartphone? If she does not then she definitely doesn't need MyFree Codec on her computer.

Hi Judy I do all the installations of software on the laptop and am not aware of ever using Softonic on it. She plays Solitaire and occasionally watches streaming casts from Florida where our friend's cheerleading team compete in competitions. I am the one who installed Kies in the past for our Samsung phones but we have now moved on to Huawei phones so Kies is redundant. I will remove it soonest.
I run Malwarebytes and Superanti on it at least twice a month but maybe should up the frequency?

Hi Barney, To clarify, I did not SEE any mention of Softonic, I listed it only because it is the one place that I know of where all of the SuperEasy Software is offered. It maybe offered elsewhere, I just haven't found it anywhere else. I know that Ashampoo does host their ads but don't know if downloads for the software are available there. Super Easy Software offers at least 18 different programs, 6 of them are free and the other 12 are the "try for free but buy to use" offerings. It easily could have come from another download site or come it with some other download. I personally run all of my security programs, along with CCleaner, once a week for sure and more often if something appears "not right". You absolutely know what you are doing for sure so how often to run your security programs is of course up to you. I know its always a shock to suddenly see some unknowns suddenly show up in a scan. I've had it happen to me and it certainly takes you aback and you wonder "what the heck is going on?" One thing to remember is the programs developed and maintained by Malwarebytes', like Malwarebytes' and AdwCleaner, are much stricter than other products and have been since 2016 when they decided that PUP's needed much more attention. It's very likely or possible that some of these files have been on your wife's computer for a long time and with the stricter criteria in place now with AdwCleaner they have been flagged and removed. You might find it interesting to read their PUP Reconsideration Information on how they now decide how files are considered to be PUP's. If there suddenly is a program flagged that you have used many years or that you know for sure is a good program you can certainly White List it within either or both programs and then it will not be removed or flagged. You also can and should contact Malwarebytes' about the possibility of a false positive too. They investigate ALL those possibilities brought to their attention and usually do it within just a couple days. If the finding you call to their attention is found indeed to be a false positive then they correct that finding usually in the very next update for the programs. Malwarebytes' False Positive Forum

I seem to remember reading that the ASK toolbar reinstated Jeeves in the UK only a few years back - could it be the Ask Toolbar that AdwCleaner is detecting ? You could look in CCleaner in the Tools/Browser Plugins section and see if the Toolbar is installed.

I did a search of my computer on 'Ask' and 'Jeeves'..nothing shows.

Yes, Ask Jeeves was reinstated in the UK only back in 2009. This is appearing ONLY in Chrome and therefore in Chrome it may very well be listed under Search Engines. Go to Search Engines and see if it is listed there. If so, delete it.
If it were the Ask Toolbar it would say Ask Toolbar not Ask Jeeves.

What add-ons do you have on Chrome? Ask Toolbar or Ask Jeeves is usually included with another download or Add-on

Try changing your default search engine for awhile. I have used DuckDuckGosince its inception in 2008. I would never use anything else. duckduckgo.com/aboutWhether this will make a difference or not, I don't really know. The finding is most definitely on Chrome or a Chromium type browser, that shows in the logs. What other browsers do you have and use? What is your default browser?

The finding is most definitely on Chrome or a Chromium type browser, that shows in the logs. What other browsers do you have and use? What is your default browser? I have Edge, IE and Firefox. I have removed Chrome. That may have solved it all. There were several threads at the Malwarebytes' forum about this very same problem. A couple were in the Malwarebytes' section of the forum and several were in the AdwCleaner section of the forum. Several people posted and never came back...so no help there of course....two others seemed to be similar to you, i.e. AdwCleaner would find and remove Ask Jeeves but it would return later. Both also had Chrome but rarely used it but the findings were only in Chrome. They uninstalled Chrome and the problem was solved. Hope this will be same results for you. Since your default browser is Firefox check to be sure that you don't have any Ask or Ask Jeeves cookies in it. If you do, highlight the listings and click Remove Selected. To get there go to Tools, Options, Privacy and Security, History, Show Cookies. Attachments:

It is irrelevant now this has been solved, but just for interest Ask Jeeves was re-branded as Ask.com in 2006. It is still possible to 'Ask Jeeves" here askjeeves.net/The privacy Policy there is an interesting read. If you ask Jeeves a question the results page will have "powered by Google Custom Search" on the lower right of the page, so I guess this Jeeves now belongs to Google.. Ask.com has this to say about Ask Jeeves help.ask.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001680173-What-happened-to-Jeeves-If the Ask Jeeves DID show again in AdwCleaner I would go back to CCleaner and disable anything Google related in Startup (all 3 tabs in there)and run AdwCleaner again and see if that fixed it. Hopefully that wont arise as removing Chrome has hopefully removed the problem as well.
