After reading on this site of Adwcleaner I decided to download it today. I ran the program, finding 3 pups, clicked clean and my computer restarted, I believe showing these were quarantined. Since then my computer is running slower than a snail. I checked to see if I could find Adwcleaner listed in my programs to uninstall it to try to bring things back to normal, but it is not listed. What am I to do to get things back to normal again. I can't even get Adwcleaner to open again to see if I can find the answer there.

Believe me, AdwCleaner is not the cause of a slow running computer. The malware found and removed by AdwCleaner are an indication that the computer needs additional cleaning. If you wish assistance please begin a new thread in our Virus and Malware help section and copy/paste the log from the AdwCleaner run. AdwCleaner is a top of the line program it is not new, it has been recommended for many years.
In the Virus and Malware help section follow the Preliminary Cleanup steps and post the requested logs. You will receive assistance ASAP.

I will attempt to follow your instructions. As I stated, I can't even get Adwcleaner to open and there should be a log there already. Malwarebytes won't open for me either. I haven't tried to open Avira yet.

The .exe file for Adwcleaner will be in your downloads folder.

The .exe file for Adwcleaner will be in your downloads folder. If that is where she has her downloads go. I don't have my downloads go to Download, I have mine go to the desktop so I can easily find them. But she should not remove AdwCleaner at this point. IF, and I do say IF because it is doubtful that her problems are caused by AdwCleaner Quarantining incorrect files, then removing AdwCleaner also deletes all of the AdwCleaner Quarantined files and those files can not be restored because they will be removed permanently along with the program. Just like files in any other security programs Quarantine, the files in Quarantine absolutely cannot cause harm to the computer from Quarantine because they are Locked in there and cannot get out unless the user takes them out or empties Quarantine. We need to find the cause of her problems before anything is completely removed. The only way to assure the files in Quarantine are not the cause is to find out what they are and there is no way to find out what they are unless she looks in Quarantine for the names and also posts the log showing what they are and what was the location that they were found and removed.

I have to believe adwcleaner is my problem. I think it is hung up. When my mouse has the arrow on my desktop there is a little hour glass with it that doesn't go away. My computer worked perfect before downloading and running the program in question. In answer to your question, Judy, the last time I ran Malwarebytes was yesterday afternoon, Avira Full scan Saturday and CCleaner every night before shutting down; no problems with any of them and the computer worked fine. In trying to follow the Preliminary Cleanup instructions I was able to run CCleaner and then had a lot of problems trying to open Avira. Once open I happened to check Scan Computer and it did a Quick Scan which came back clean. It took a long time to get it to start a Full scan and that started almost ten hours ago and still is at only 56.3%.(it never has taken this long) Last night at times I had a popup "Web browser stopped running this script. A script on this page is causing your web browser to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer might become unresponsive" I then had a choice of stopping script. Also, I checked Task Manager - Details and adwcleaner, mbam.exe and WerFault.exe are suspended, if this tells you anything. If this scan ever completes I plan on restarting my computer again to see if anything changes, unless I hear differently from you.

If this scan ever completes I plan on restarting my computer again to see if anything changes, unless I hear differently from you. Stop the Avira scan and restart the computer. There IS something running in the background that is trying to stop this scan from running. It should never take that long. Did this script error happen before or after you ran AdwCleaner? Did you stop the script as you were instructed to do? What was the web page? What browser were you using when this happened? Where did you get AdwCleaner download? You said adwcleaner is listed in Task Monitor-Details ....is it adwcleaner.exe? It is odd that it would be there because AdwCleaner is NOT a program that is installed, it is free standing application so it shouldn't be listed there at all unless it is running a scan and would not be listed there as suspended but it would be listed as Running. Processes being suspended is not usually a problem or unknown. The ability to suspend programs is a design feature of W8 and W10 and is to ensure that they do not consume memory and CPU time when they are idle, not running in other words. Have you tried clicking End Task on these items? One of the apps you note as suspended is Werfault.exe process is a part of Windows Error Reporting in Windows. It will activate when there is an error that generates info to send to Microsoft. Werfault.exe, can use an unusually high number of your system resources. This then can cause your computer to become slow or unresponsive.

Question: I see by your signature you are using Malwarebytes' Premium meaning the PAID version that runs all the time, AND Malwarebytes' Anti-Exploit Free. Is that correct? If so you need to Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Exploit Free because it is no longer a stand alone program but is a part of Malwarebytes' Premium. Having both on the computer could cause you problems.

First of all, Anti-Exploit is no longer listed as a program so will have to correct my signature. The Avira scan stopped itself along with Real Time Protection! I keep trying to fix it but it doesn't happen. Should I uninstall and reinstall? The script error is just since downloading and running adwcleaner which I downloaded from one of the posts on this site and I do stop script when it pops up. I always us FF as my browser and since all these problems, every time I close it I get the post that FF has crashed, etc. And yes, it is adwcleaner_7.1.1.exe listed in Task Manager, only under details, now listed 5 times. As for the little hour glass by the arrow on my desktop, it was gone after I shut down and restarted my computer, but since I attempted to open Malwarbytes to see why it didn't do it's scheduled scan this afternoon, it is back. I am so sorry I downloaded adwcleaner!

I am so sorry I downloaded adwcleaner! Sounds like, yes, there is a problem for you with this new version of AdwCleaner. It may be something on your computer or some sort of problem with your download. Others here have downloaded and used it without any difficulty so it must be either something with your computer, the download or maybe conflict with something else. AdwCleaner is NOT an installed program that runs in the background. It is a stand alone application that will only run when the User tells it to run so there is something really odd going on here because it should not run or even attempt to run on its own it isn't that type of application. The official download site is this one listed in our Preliminary Cleanup Steps; www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/Is it the one you used? Since you are having these problems STOP trying to do anything else. Leave your Avira and Malwarebytes' alone, do nothing else. You need to go to the Malwarebytes' Forum AdwCleaner section and Join there and post all of your problems with this new version, they MUST be told by YOU, they cannot and do not offer help when another person posts instead of the actual user posts problems. In other words I cannot go there and post your problem and get help for you from them. They don't and won't work "3rd party" they will only work with the actual user having the problems. There is too much of a risk of error when not working with the person with the problem. They work with you very quickly, they have steps and tools to use that we are not allowed to use here, plus I would have no clue how to use them. These are specific to Malwarebytes' helpers themselves. They WILL help you, I guarantee it. Go to this link: Malwarebytes AdwCleanerI truly am sorry you are having these problems but you absolutely MUST contact Malwarebytes' ASAP. If there is a problem with the application the only way the developers can know it is if users report it. If users have a problem and do not report it they are doing themselves, the developers and other users a disservice. Please report to Malwarebytes' so that they can help you. Nobody here can or should offer suggestions because that may cause more problems for you. Malwarebytes' WILL help you for sure. I guarantee it.

I just downloaded AdwCleaner 7.1.1 and ran it on this computer. The scan only took a few seconds and found one pup. Told the AdwCleaner to clean the found file and reboot the computer. Everything worked as expected and the computer responds normally. JME I have to agree with Judy that your problems are not AdwCleaner related and that you should follow the instructions given by Judy to clean your computer

I believe I have my problem fixed. It appears Avira was conflicting with Malwarebytes. Not being able to uninstall all of Avira I disabled it. Then checked my Security Action Center and found I was protected by Malwarebytes. Now both Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner will open and can be used and, so far, the computer is running as before the problem developed. I thank you all for your help and concern.

How long have you run the paid version of Malwarebytes'? Is this a brand new install? I presume you did pay for it. If this is just a trial version that all expires in 14 days and you will be left with the Free version and will need Avira. What happened when you tried to uninstall Avira?

I don't remember how many years ago I had to take my computer in for repair because it froze up restarting after downloading updates. When I got it back the paid version was installed. Never had any problem running Avast or Avira until downloading Adwcleaner. Might have been the straw that broke the camel's back?

Malwarebytes 3 Premium is the very first one that replaces the anti-virus program this went into affect December 2016. Prior to December 2016 the paid version of Malwarebytes' did NOT contain av capabilities and you did need to also have an anti-virus program installed. It costs $39.00 per year but if your previous subscription cost $24.95 the price will stay at that amount. I am surprised that you have not had problems prior to this running both Avira & Malwarebytes'3 Premium since then. Yes, it may be that adding AdwCleaner may have been the "straw" . Keep AdwCleaner but do completely Uninstall Avira. You shouldn't have two AV programs on there. Tell me what problems you are having removing Avira and I can help you with that.

I had three different Avira programs, two with the umbrella and one with the shield. It is the one with the shield that I can't remove. Nothing happens when I click uninstall. Even tried with CCleaner and couldn't uninstall it there. It still appears in my Security Action Center as being off along with Windows Defender with Malwarebytes being on. It is also in the Windows Apps charms or whatever they are called.

I have One Avira program, two icons showing in Programs & Features but they are ONE program, just different portions. Umbrella is Real Time Protection, Shield is actually the full program. Not sure what the 2nd Red Umbrella would be. At any rate, you can remove Avira manually by following the instructions given in this link; Manual uninstallation of Avira Antivirus
You will have to download the Avira Registry Cleaner tool and do all the subsequent work in Safe Mode. Full instructions and link to the tool are found on the link above.

In Task Manager is avgnt.exe and running and I can't end the task. This is the Avira System Tray application. Did you reboot AFTER doing the uninstall of Avira files via Programs & Features? This is an absolute must when Uninstalling any program. Many portions cannot be removed until early in the boot process.

Yes, I did reboot after uninstalling what I was able. I thank you for all this information but I just don't think I am ready to tackle something that is so complicating to me. I have bookmarked both sites and downloaded the registry cleaner tool. Why did they have to make things so hard to even get into safe mode? Thank you again.

You have to download that Avira tool FIRST.
Try this to get to safe mode:
Press “Win + R” to get the Run dialog. When the run box comes up then type in msconfig and then click OK.
When msconfig opens go to the “Boot” tab. Check the option “Safe Boot” and click OK or Apply. Reboot the computer and it will boot into Safe Mode.
Follow the directions on the Avira link I gave you and it should be gone.
When you are finished then go back to msconfig, remove that Safe Boot option. Choose OK or Apply.
Reboot and the computer should boot to normal mode

You are the greatest! I just finished writing down these instructions which I found in a search; sounds more like something I could handle. But like I said, it is a job for another day. I didn't get very much sleep last night and my brain is about fried now. The tool is already downloaded and I will move it to my desktop before starting the job. I'm off to bed now. Love you, Judy!
