I have Thunderbird set as the default email app on the computer which I use in our Club office. Windows Mail keeps popping up at random intervals showing me new messages and filling the screen while I'm working. How do I disable Windows Mail to stop it doing this? I have Thunderbird set as default in PC Settings but Windows Mail still keeps butting in!

Open the mail app and click on the Settings icon in the lower left. A pane will open on the right from where you can select Notifications and move the slider to off. You can choose to disable for individual accounts separately or check the box to apply it to all accounts, which would be your best choice as you don't want any notifications. You must have set the Mail app up at sometime if it is receiving messages. You can delete added accounts from the same Settings by choosing Manage Accounts and clicking on the account you wish to delete. Another window will open and in there is the option to Delete each account. If you have not been deleting received messages in your Mail app it is likely you will have a very large number sitting there

Hi Eve I might be completely wrong but does Thunderbird not just collate messages from other email clients? The club's email come to Thunderbird via Windows Mail. I only use Thunderbird in the club so that I can access club emails from home. Perhaps there is a better way?

Thunderbird collects its mail DIRECTLY from accounts not from another CLIENT.
If you want to see that mail at home, you could set each mail account from the club that you want to see to forward to an email address that you get at home.

Barney no you are not correct, Phil is correct. Thunderbird is an email Client, Windows Mail is an email Client but there is no way for one email client to collect mail from another Client. Email Clients receives the mail from the email account Servers.
There are several options for you to use in order to read the club mail both at the club and at home. You can use only Web Mail for club mail, not use an email Client for it at all. Then you can use your browser to sign in both at the club or at home. This signs you in directly to the server and the mail is never downloaded to any computer. All the work is done using the browser, no matter what computer you are using.
Or if you prefer to use an email Client then you can use any email Client (Program) you wish, use an IMAP configuration not a POP configuration and then you can access the very same mail from multiple locations, i.e. at your club and also at home.
Ask Leo has a very good explanation on all the options you can choose when you wish to access the same email from different computers and locations.

Please ignore my rantings!
I use Thunderbird to access the club email from my home pc. The club email is set up via btconnect.com which is web based email client. I can access and read the emails from home. Incidentally, I also use BlueMail to access all my email clients from my cellphone.
I will follow your instructions to disable Windows Mail on the club computer.

Barney I'm sure that you do know that web mail is accessible from any location via any computer & browser and an email client like Thunderbird or any other email client is not necessary if that is the only reason you're using it. You can read club mail via web mail using any computer, any browser both at the club and home even if you have already read it in the other location as long as you didn't delete it from the server on that first reading. Heck you could come to the U.S. and read it here at my house using my computer too as long as you use your password & user name. That is one of the benefits of web mail that we often forget.
